PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Daigo Goto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phal Um (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Daigo Goto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phal Um!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Um misses with a straight right.
Goto on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Goto swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Um lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Goto on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.

Um feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Goto working for a triangle but Um defends it easily.

Goto is looking for a triangle here but Um uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Goto looks to move to half guard but instead Um has passed into mount! Damn!
Goto is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Goto in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Goto working to try and regain half guard.
Um connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Um raining down shots from the mount!
Um fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Goto is looking to get to half guard.
Um breaks from Goto's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Um looking to control and managing it successfully.
Goto tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Um with good strikes from the mount here!
Um prevents Goto from getting the reversal.
Goto is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Um cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Goto bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Um looking to hit a scissor sweep but Goto is one step ahead there.
Goto trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Um manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Um sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Goto is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Goto seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Um does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Um trying to hold on to Goto's head to control him but Goto postures up.
Goto is pressing down on Um's thigh, looking to free his foot. Um is holding on for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Goto missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Goto trying to control from half guard but Um is working away.
Um misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Um is trying to get back to full guard.
Goto drops an elbow to the side of Um's head.
Goto is keen to just control but Um is a slippery customer.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Goto fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Um cracks Goto with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Um loads up on a big right hand but Goto slips the punch.
Goto moves out of range as Um strikes.
Goto shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Um as he jumps to the side.

Um feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Um makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Um stays in close to Goto's body and controls the position.
Um postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Um is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Goto looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Um trying to control the position from guard on top but Goto is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Goto is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Goto keeping moving, preventing Um from controlling successfully.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Um misses with a straight left.

Um fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Goto sprawls well initially but Um persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Um wants to take a breather but Goto is having none of it.
Um looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Um not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Goto tries to roll over but Um keeps him under control.
Goto is refusing to be controlled, as Um sits in half guard.
Goto is trying to get back to full guard.
Um drops an elbow to the side of Goto's head.
Um trying to control from half guard but Goto is working away.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Um cracks Goto with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Um thows a body shot but no joy.
Goto missing with a left hand there. Um was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Um scores with a takedown into Goto's guard.

Goto has an active guard here but Um has managed to pass into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Goto wants to control but Um is keeping busy.
Um is trying to control the action in half guard but Goto is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Goto gets full guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Phal Um showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

enabling Goto to counter with a crisp jab.
A left and a right from Goto both land. Nice combination.
Um takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Um connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Goto lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Um might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Goto keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Um.

and Um counters with a single leg into guard. Goto didn't expect that.
Um wants to control from the top but Goto keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Goto has control of Um's left arm, preventing Um from doing any damage.

Um throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
letting Goto counter with a right hand.
Goto shoots for a takedown but Um saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Daigo Goto. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Um throws a good cross that connects.
Um punishes Goto's body with a nice straight punch.
Goto misses with a wild body shot.
Um falls off balance throwing a combination
and Goto counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Goto walks into a stiff left hand from Um.
Jab by Um.
Phal Um seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nice shot by Um.
A punch lands to the side of Goto 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Um throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Um throws the left hand but Goto avoids the punch easily.
Um throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Daigo Goto has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Goto uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Um.
Goto misses with a two punch combination.

Phal Um comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Um has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
