The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shug gets tackled into the cage by Smith. Smith maintains the clinch.
Smith keeps control of Shug as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Shug is trying to pull guard but Smith turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Smith lands an uppercut.

Smith breaks the clinch.
Smith connects with a body shot that sends Shug's belly button to the back.

Smith moves into the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Smith's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Shug has Smith pressed against the cage, preventing Smith from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Smith prevents the takedown attempt.

Shug escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Smith slips under a jab from Shug.
Shug wants to clinch.
Smith throws a nice looking combination but Shug bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Smith clinches with his opponent.
Shug tries to stall but Smith uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Shug is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Smith to keep the fight standing.
John Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jimmy Shug.

Shug pulls guard.
Shug should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Smith wants to stand but Shug has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith wants to control from the top but Shug keeps moving.

Smith stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Shug fails to land with a series of punches.
Smith throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Shug changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Shug manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shug pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
John Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Shug wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.

Smith has Shug up against the cage in a clinch.
Shug is working for takedown but Smith is calmly controlling the position for now.
Smith has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Shug's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Shug effectively controlling the action here.
Smith gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Shug.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shug tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smith swivels and escapes.
Shug looks gassed!

Smith closes the distance and clinches.
Shug tries for a takedown but Smith manages to get underhooks.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Smith fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith scores with the left hand. Shug knows he should have avoided that one.

Smith takes the fight into the clinch.
Smith is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shug shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Shug keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Smith clinches up with Shug and pushes him back against the cage.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shug takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Smith takes the fight into the clinch.

Smith manages to break the clinch.

Smith gets in close and instigates a clinch.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Smith is trying to break the clinch but Shug has him pressed against the cage.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shug takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Smith uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.

Smith moves into range and clinches up with Shug.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Decent striking displayed by Smith there.
Shug walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Shug gets caught by a brutal right hook which buckles his knees! Shug tries to backpedal with his spaghettilegs but Smith is headhunting and goes for the kill. A jab and a right hook connect and Shug buckles badly as his eyes roll back. The referee steps in and saves Shug!! Shug is complaining but he was clearly out on his feet. Smith throws his mouthpiece into the crowd. Mmmm spit-tastic.
