PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donnie Stavros (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stavros kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Time of dying. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Donnie Stavros!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Steve Smith and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stavros shoots in for a takedown but Jones shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Jones gets a double leg takedown into Stavros's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jones accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Stavros escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jones gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Jones trying to control but Stavros is working from the bottom.
Jones looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Jon Jones has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Jones shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Stavros being controlled here, momentarily.
Jones tries to stand but Stavros is controlling from the bottom.

Stavros keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass.

Jon Jones has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Jones shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Stavros napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Stavros is trying to get back to half guard.
Jones staying calm.

Let's hope that Jones has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Jones tries for a kimura but Stavros is defending well.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Jones is looking to take a break and control but Stavros is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Jones has Stavros up against the cage in a clinch.

Jones pulls Stavros into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones dominated that round.
That's time! Stavros's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Jones looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stavros!
Jones misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Jones controlling the pace for now.
Stavros gets back to half guard.

Jones is keen to just control but Stavros is a slippery customer.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jon Jones hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Jones tries to clinch up but Stavros circles away and keeps his distance.

Jones fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Stavros, pushing him back against the cage.

Jones jumps guard.

Jones throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Stavros escapes and throws Jones's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Stavros wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A control attempt from Jones but he's now mounted!

Stavros has hold of Jones's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Jones manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Jones wants to hold on but Stavros pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones is looking to get to half guard.
Stavros takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
Stavros is trying to stick to Jones's back but Jones is turning into Stavros. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Stavros's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Jones.
Jones wants to stand but Stavros is controlling his posture from full guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jon Jones hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Jones gets the takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Stavros's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stavros keeps working.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Jones is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Jones gets a takedown into half guard.
Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Stavros does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Jones is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Stavros sees it coming and defends easily.

Jones keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Jon Jones has got the better of the ground game so far.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jon Jones hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Stavros gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Stavros is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jon Jones hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Stavros with a poor takedown
and Jones makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Stavros really felt that one!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Stavros dodges the punch combination from Jones.

Jones darts in and clinches Stavros up against the cage.

Jones manages to pull guard.

Jones throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Stavros from controlling successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stavros has gone for a leg lock! Jones slips out almost immediately though and dives into Stavros's guard.
Jones wants to pass the guard but Stavros is keeping the position.
Jones is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jones not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Donnie Stavros.
Stavros shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Jones pinned against the cage. Jones gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Jones decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jon Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
