PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Joe Deli (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andrew Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Deli!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Andrew Patterson!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Franklyn Lucas and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Deli avoids a punch combination nicely.
Deli shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Patterson eats them both and turns towards Deli to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Deli tried to score with a low kick but Patterson checks it.
Patterson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Deli swivels and escapes.

Patterson gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Deli trying to control the position from guard on top but Patterson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Deli throwing strikes from guard but Patterson blocks nicely.
Deli not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Deli knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Patterson on the ground.
Deli with a flurry of punches that miss.

Patterson pulls Deli in to control the position.
Patterson looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Deli tries to free his leg and advance position but Patterson is retaining full guard.
Patterson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Deli controls from within his opponent's guard.

Joe Deli has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Patterson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Deli jumps guard and drags Patterson to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Patterson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Deli not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Deli looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Patterson gets to his feet. Deli looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Patterson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
A clash of legs there as Deli blocks the low kick.
Patterson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Deli looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patterson is fending him off so far but Deli persists. Nope, Patterson circles away and we're back to standing.
Deli tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Patterson swivels and escapes.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Patterson tries to clinch but Deli is having none of it.
Deli shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Patterson pinned against the cage. Patterson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Deli. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Deli is breathing heavily.

Patterson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Deli looks like he's trying to stand up.
Patterson controlling the pace.
Deli wants to control the action here but instead Patterson manages to pass to full mount!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Patterson can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Deli is looking to escape.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A close round but Andrew Patterson will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Patterson feints and as Deli raises his hands in defense, Patterson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Deli throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Deli looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Patterson trying to control but Deli is working from the bottom.
Patterson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Deli swivels though and keeps the full guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andrew Patterson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Patterson tries to close the distance and clinch but Deli swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Deli bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Deli misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
You can see the frustration on Patterson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Deli decides to stand back up. Deli steps back and let's Patterson get back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Deli displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Patterson.
Deli swats away the attempt to clinch by Patterson.
Deli tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Patterson paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Deli looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patterson is fending him off so far but Deli persists. Nope, Patterson circles away and we're back to standing.

Patterson rushes Deli and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Deli has had enough of the clinch but Patterson keeps him there for the moment.
Patterson is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Patterson tries to land a knee to the head but Deli blocks with his arms.
Patterson goes for a takedown in the clinch but Deli prevents it.

Patterson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Deli throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Deli just misses with a punch to the body.
Patterson tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Deli manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Deli bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

and Patterson counters with a shoot takedown. Deli fights it but they end up in guard.
Deli controls Patterson momentarily but Patterson frees himself.
Andrew Patterson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Deli is looking to sweep but instead, Patterson has passed into half guard.
Deli blocking the ground and pound attempt from Patterson.
Patterson is taking a breather. Deli says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Patterson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Deli keeps working.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Deli is staying active underneath Patterson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andrew Patterson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Patterson wriggles free and stands up.
Deli tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Patterson was well out of range. Poor timing from Deli.

Deli gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Patterson to score an easy takedown into full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Patterson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Deli, up you get!

Patterson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Deli defends it nicely.
Patterson tries to clinch but Deli is having none of it.
Deli tries to score a power double leg takedown but Patterson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Deli somewhat.

Patterson manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Deli wants to control from the top but Patterson keeps moving.

Andrew Patterson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Patterson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
