Sand has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sonnen is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Sand tries to get the hooks in deep but Sonnen pushed the leg off.

Sand has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Sonnen's body.
I really don't envy Sonnen right now.
