PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jesse McCoy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Souwer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tony Souwer told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Taro Takaoka.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCoy throws a jab when Souwer was well out of range.
Souwer scores with a jab to the body.
McCoy thows a left - swing and a miss!
Souwer digs a good hook to McCoy's body.
Souwer scores with a sloppy right hand. McCoy should have avoided that one.
Souwer scores with a nice strike.

Souwer clobbers McCoy with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Tony Souwer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
McCoy lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Souwer circles away quickly and effectively.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from McCoy.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Souwer, as that shot connected.

A looping hook to the body misses from Souwer. McCoy does a little dance to reset his feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Souwer lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Souwer throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent McCoy stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
McCoy gets cracked there but stands up to it.
McCoy misses with a straight right.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Souwer scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Donk. Souwer catches McCoy right on the button with a cross.

and Souwer counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
McCoy tries to land a leg kick but Souwer saw it coming and moves away.

Souwer connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed McCoy momentarily.
McCoy shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Souwer as he avoids it easily.

McCoy misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Souwer.
Horrible takedown by McCoy or perhaps it was just good defense by Souwer which made him look bad.

The fighters circle momentarily. Souwer darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Souwer uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before McCoy has time to react.

McCoy closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Souwer's guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
McCoy throws an elbow that misses. Souwer uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McCoy's guard. Nice move by Souwer!

McCoy has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Souwer lands a couple of decent looking shots.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McCoy wants to sweep here but Souwer controlling him for the moment.

McCoy's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

McCoy steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Souwer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCoy swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Souwer avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Souwer thuds his right hand into McCoy's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Souwer displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as McCoy throws out the jab.

McCoy closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Souwer did well to prevent McCoy getting side control.

McCoy looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Souwer with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Souwer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McCoy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McCoy is nestled in close to Souwer, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

McCoy is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Souwer has managed to free his arm - good work.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. McCoy connects with a nice short shot to Souwer's temple.
