The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alves shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Alves showed some decent athleticism there.
Alves working Hayes over with strikes.
Alves scoring with strikes to the body and head.

Alves is looking for a kimura but Hayes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Alves to get the leverage.
Alves drops an elbow to the side of Hayes's head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alves lands with a punch from half guard.
Hayes keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Alves is trying to control the action in half guard but Hayes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Alves is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hayes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Alves.

Alves is working for a submission of some sort.
Hayes keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Hayes manages to get to full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hayes controls Alves momentarily but Alves frees himself.
Alves slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Alves is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Hayes will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Alves lands a decent elbow from side control.
Alves looks up at the clock and then as Hayes takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Alves smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Alves thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Alves postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Hayes is looking for a sweep.
Alves is looking to take a break and control but Hayes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Hayes takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Alves cracks Hayes with a big right hand but Hayes just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hayes avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Alves.
The ground and pound from Alves seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Alves has hold of Hayes's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Hayes tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Alves cranks the arm and Hayes screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Hayes, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
