PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Askren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zartan Zatarain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zatarain is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Nine Inch Nails - Hurt. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Zartan Zatarain!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Vladimir Khabensky and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren walks into a straight right hand from Zatarain.
Askren steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Zatarain. That one must have hurt.
Nice takedown defense from Askren. No joy for Zatarain on that attempt.
Askren misses with a low kick.
A punch combination from Zatarain misses.
Zatarain shoots in looking for a takedown. Askren tries to sprawl out of it but Zatarain keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Askren manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Askren shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zatarain as he jumps to the side.
Zartan Zatarain seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Zatarain is looking to clinch but Askren is avoiding it.
Zatarain on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Askren. Askren obviously looking to wear him down.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Askren misses with a few strikes there.

Askren looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Zatarain is staying active underneath Askren, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Askren in particular looking to stall.
The fighters are battling for position here. Zatarain manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Zatarain keeping moving, preventing Askren from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up because John Askren just wasn't active enough.

Zatarain tries to clinch but Askren moves out of range.
Zatarain shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Askren misses with a straight right.

Zatarain bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Askren is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Zatarain throws a strike aimed at the side of Askren's head but Askren avoids it well.
Zatarain has knee on belly momentarily but Askren bucks him off and regains half guard.
Zatarain looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Askren with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Zatarain throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Askren blocking the ground and pound attempt from Zatarain.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Askren is trying to get back to full guard.
Zatarain is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Zatarain throws a strike but Askren avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Zatarain throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Askren works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Zatarain accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Askren lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Zatarain!
Askren thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Zatarain tries to hold on but Askren postures up.
Askren looking to control but Zatarain is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Askren lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Zatarain hang on?
Zatarain tries to reverse the position but Askren maintains control.
Zatarain is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Askren looking to finish Zatarain with some ground and pound. This is bad for Zatarain!
Askren controlling the position easily from mount.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

That was a close round but I would say that John Askren will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Askren moves away from the strike by Zatarain.
Askren with a nice cross.
Zatarain will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Zatarain is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Askren throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Zatarain was covering up waiting for the punch and Askren finishes the takedown easily into guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Askren wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Zatarain lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Askren backs up against the cage.
Askren tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Zatarain swivels and escapes.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zatarain doesn't manage to clinch there - Askren circles away.
Nice sprawl there from Askren as Zatarain shoots in.
Askren swats away the attempt to clinch by Zatarain.
Askren shoots in for a takedown but Zatarain shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Zatarain closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Zatarain keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Askren. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zatarain swings for the body but Askren moves out of range.
Zatarain wants to land a leg kick but Askren is out of range.
Zatarain tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Askren counters with a lovely shot to the body.

Zatarain fails with the takedown.
Askren misses with a series of wild punches.
Askren lands a nice shot to the body.
Askren gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Zatarain.
Askren has a takedown stuffed.
Zatarain jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Zatarain is defended easily by Askren.
Zatarain slips a jab from Askren.

Zatarain closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Zatarain looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Askren with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Askren has his hands clasped together around Zatarain's back. He's all about the action.

John Askren overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Zatarain chips away with some ground and pound.
Zatarain postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Askren kicks Zatarain off and gets to his feet.
Askren scores with a nice strike.

A close second round but Zartan Zatarain will probably get the nod - 10:9.

John Askren has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Zartan Zatarain.

Askren dives in and scores a takedown into Zatarain's guard.
Askren wants to control from the top but Zatarain keeps moving.
Askren not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Askren trying to control but Zatarain is working from the bottom.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Askren accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Askren.
Askren throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Askren shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Zatarain as he avoids it easily.
Askren connects with the punch.
Jab, jab by Zatarain - just one landing.
Zatarain tries to clinch up
and Askren counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
A combination from Zatarain does no damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Askren throws a left jab followed by a right to the body, Oh Zatarain colapses and takes a barrage of punches from Askren as he moves to mount! the ref stops the fight and Zatarain is left battered and dazed whilst Askren and his camp cheer!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:07 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Askren!
Our winner, John Askren, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
