PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chris Rainey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Groove (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 1, fighting out of New York, Chris Rainey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Robert Groove!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Ryoma Takatsuka and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Groove is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Rainey.


It looks like Robert Groove has been cut.

Groove shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Groove trying to control the position from guard on top but Rainey is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Groove loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Groove accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Groove engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Robert Groove was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Rainey is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Groove.
Groove shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rainey defends it nicely.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Robert Groove.
Rainey looks to land a combination. Groove sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Groove is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Rainey's half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rainey is trying to stand up here but Groove is controlling him well.

Groove with the ground and pound but Rainey uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Groove passes Rainey's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Groove looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Rainey is looking to escape.
Groove frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Rainey scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

Rainey ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Groove moves away.

and Groove counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Rainey!

It looks like Chris Rainey has been cut.

Groove thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Groove wants to control the pace but Rainey is squirming around nicely.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Groove is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Rainey is surviving well by controlling Groove's body position as best he can.
Robert Groove has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Groove showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Rainey tries to clinch up but Groove circles away and keeps his distance.
Groove walks into a straight right hand from Rainey.
Rainey scores with a shot to the body.

Rainey drops Groove with a beautiful combination! Groove stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Rainey is looking for the KO!


Groove is rocked!

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Rainey.
Groove is still on wobbly legs! Can Rainey finish him?
Rainey moves in looking to clinch but Groove pushes him off.
Groove has a takedown stuffed.
Rainey fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Chris Rainey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Groove shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rainey's guard.
Rainey keeping moving, preventing Groove from controlling successfully.
Rainey is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Groove is controlling him.
Groove trying to control the position from guard on top but Rainey is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Groove working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Groove won't allow Rainey to get back to his feet.

Groove drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rainey dives on top into guard.
Groove trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Groove escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Rainey gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Groove seems to have recovered his senses.
Rainey stopping the sweep attempt from Groove.

We're going to have a standup here because Chris Rainey wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Groove lands a nice leg kick that just misses Rainey's sensitive parts.
Rainey swinging wildly here.
Rainey stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rainey wants it to stay on the feet.

Rainey motions for Groove to come forward. Rainey throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Groove looks to score with a jab to the body but Rainey is just out of range.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Rainey enables Groove to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Rainey manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Rainey is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Groove is controlling him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Groove fails with a takedown attempt.
Chris Rainey has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert Groove.
Rainey throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Groove fails with a takedown attempt.
Groove tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Chris Rainey is winning the standup battle so far.

Groove closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Rainey quickly recovers to half guard.
Groove looks to land a strike but Rainey avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Groove stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rainey swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Groove chips away with some ground and pound.
Robert Groove is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Groove pushing down on Rainey's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Groove is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Let's hope that Groove has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Chris Rainey.
I think Groove has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
