PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Randy McGruger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Peters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ben Peters told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Randy McGruger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ben Peters!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Elvis Blanc and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Peters connects with a body shot.
Peters throws a right and a left that both miss.
Peters misses with a wild combination.

McGruger clinches up with Peters and pushes him back against the cage.
Peters tries to pull guard but McGruger won't allow it.
Peters fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Peters tries to pull guard but McGruger won't allow it.
Randy McGruger has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ben Peters.
Peters gets underhooks to prevent McGruger's takedown attempt.
Peters tries to pull guard but McGruger won't allow it.

McGruger has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Peters is trying to keep an underhook but McGruger manages to get the takedown into half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Peters is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Peters can do anything to dispel that myth.
Peters is trying to stand up here but McGruger is controlling him well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Peters manages to get to full guard.
McGruger missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Peters doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

McGruger throws a big elbow that misses.
Peters is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
McGruger has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

McGruger thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
McGruger wants to control from the top but Peters keeps moving.

Peters isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McGruger stacks Peters on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McGruger!
Peters tries to bench press McGruger off him but McGruger keeps the position.

McGruger throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Peters parries the strikes from McGruger easily there. McGruger is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Peters to escape.
Peters manages to work his way to half guard, despite McGruger's best efforts.

Peters trying to hold on to McGruger's head to control him but McGruger postures up.
McGruger is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Peters is pressing down on McGruger's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Peters throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Peters has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but McGruger can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Peters manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McGruger manages to get himself to full guard.

McGruger is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Peters thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Peters is looking to take a break and control but McGruger is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Peters tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Peters has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Peters wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McGruger, who protects the arm well.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McGruger gets back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McGruger keeps control of the position for the meantime.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ben Peters will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Peters fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
McGruger shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Peters as he jumps to the side.
McGruger closes the distance and clinches up with Peters, looking for a takedown. McGruger pushes Peters against the cage but Peters circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McGruger is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Peters fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
McGruger shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Peters pinned against the cage. Peters gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Randy McGruger. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Peters lands a glancing blow to the side of McGruger's head.
Ben Peters seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McGruger takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Peters throws a shot from downtown. McGruger moves away and avoids it.

Peters misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from McGruger.
Peters scores with a hook.
Peters darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Peters comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

McGruger is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McGruger is looking to clinch but Peters is avoiding it.
Peters throws a right hand that misses

and McGruger counters with a shoot takedown. Peters fights it but they end up in guard.
Peters looking to hit a scissor sweep but McGruger is one step ahead there.
McGruger distracts Peters with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
McGruger trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
McGruger scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

McGruger got a little sloppy there for a moment and Peters has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McGruger has managed to get both his arms back between Peters's legs - danger averted.
McGruger content to stall in guard here.
Peters tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Peters throws his legs up looking for a submission but McGruger uses it to pass to side control.
McGruger lands an elbow.
Peters throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Peters wants to control but McGruger postures up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McGruger working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Peters regains half guard.

McGruger seems to be looking for submissions.

Peters is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but McGruger pulls his head out easily.

Peters is trying to defend against the ground and pound but McGruger scores with a couple of nice shots.
McGruger prevents Peters from improving his position.
McGruger wants to control but Peters is keeping him busy.

McGruger looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

A close second round but Ben Peters will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Peters jabs at McGruger's body.
Peters stuns McGruger with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Peters takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
McGruger uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Peters.
Ben Peters seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Peters darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

McGruger throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Peters was covering up waiting for the punch and McGruger finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Peters looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Peters avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
McGruger is looking to work some ground and pound but Peters has wrist control.
Peters doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Randy McGruger overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Peters is controlling McGruger's posture.

Peters working for submissions but it's allowed McGruger to get to half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. McGruger connects with a nice short shot to Peters's temple.
McGruger throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Peters to regain full guard.
McGruger wants to control from the top but Peters keeps moving.

Peters has his foot on McGruger's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. McGruger works his way back into a safe position though.
Peters really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McGruger. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Peters working for a triangle but McGruger defends it easily.
McGruger sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Peters's guard.

McGruger drops an elbow to the side of Peters's head.

Peters looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and McGruger pushes past his half guard into mount!
Peters tries to lock up and control but McGruger gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

McGruger looking to isolate an arm here. Peters doesn't see it coming and as McGruger extends the arm, he's forced to tap out! Nice submission by McGruger!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Randy McGruger!
Randy McGruger really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Popeye’s Spinach - 159 + 158 Proof Supps logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
