PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Hawks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawks has chosen 300 Violin Orchestra as his entrance music. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Royce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jason Hawks!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawks is looking to clinch but Gracie is avoiding it.
Gracie shoots in but no luck this time.
Hawks shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Gracie counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Hawks's guard now.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Hawks keeps moving.
Gracie trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Gracie is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Hawks is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie postures up in Hawks's guard and throws a big left but Hawks blocks it.
Gracie works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Gracie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gracie seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Royce Gracie has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Hawks misses with a low kick.
Gracie takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Hawks throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gracie tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hawks is in Gracie's guard.
Gracie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hawks manages to get himself to full guard.
Gracie pushing down on Hawks's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Gracie wants to pass to mount but Hawks is defending the position.
Gracie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gracie gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Hawks lands a head kick!
Some bone on bone action there as Gracie checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Gracie slaps away a takedown attempt from Hawks, before circling back to the center of the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawks keeps Gracie at a distance using the push kick.

Hawks tries to sprawl but Gracie drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Hawks looks gassed!

Hawks is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Gracie scores with a couple of nice shots.
Gracie tries to pass the half guard into mount. Hawks knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Gracie is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Hawks looks like he's trying to stand up.
Hawks won't allow Gracie to pass to mount.

Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Gracie darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Hawks blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gracie.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Gracie wants to pass the guard but Hawks is defending well.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Royce Gracie just wasn't active enough.
Hawks tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Hawks gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gracie to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Gracie slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Hawks wants to stand and escape but Gracie is having none of it.

Hawks shoots in and drives through. Gracie sprawls well.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Hawks lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Gracie has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Gracie and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Gracie avoids a punch combination nicely.
Hawks is breathing heavily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hawks enables Gracie to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hawks manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Gracie prevents Hawks from getting back to his feet.
Gracie is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Gracie content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Gracie slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Hawks has hold of Gracie's hands but Gracie slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Gracie looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gracie throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Gracie is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Hawks throws a combination. Gracie tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Gracie fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Hawks sprawls well initially but Gracie persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Gracie content to control rather than advance.

Gracie is nestled in close to Hawks, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Gracie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

so Gracie counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gracie lands a couple of elbows.
Gracie with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Jason Hawks has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Gracie has gone for a leg lock! Hawks slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gracie's guard.
Gracie wants to sweep but no luck.

Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Hawks defends easily.
Gracie wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Hawks throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Hawks tries to stand but Gracie is controlling from the bottom.

Hawks got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gracie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hawks has managed to get both his arms back between Gracie's legs - danger averted.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gracie looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hawks is one step ahead there.
Gracie is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Gracie perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Royce Gracie showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gracie, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
