PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between CJ Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luan Nguyen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nguyen has chosen Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, CJ Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Luan Nguyen!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Winston Howard and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Smith.

Nguyen moves into range and clinches up with Smith.

Nguyen pulls guard effortlessly.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Smith is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Nguyen is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Nguyen has escaped and now he's on top!
Nguyen sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Nguyen trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nguyen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Smith looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Nguyen is stalling in the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Nguyen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Smith has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Nguyen has managed to get both his arms back between Smith's legs - danger averted.

Smith is looking for a triangle here but Nguyen uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Nguyen staying calm.
Smith tries to bench press Nguyen off him but Nguyen keeps the position.
Smith avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Nguyen.
Smith manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nguyen controlling the action here.
Nguyen tries to pass to full mount but Smith defends it.
Smith slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Smith working for a triangle but Nguyen defends it easily.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Smith is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Nguyen is aware though and is defending well.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Nguyen has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Smith to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Nguyen is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Smith pulls down on the head and he's put Nguyen to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). CJ Smith!
CJ Smith decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
