PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pepper James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Russell Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Jones's choice of entrance music: Sierra Leone. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pepper James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Russell Jones!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches James napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Jones controls the position.
Jones wants to lay and pray for a moment but James keeps working.
Jones throwing strikes but James manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

James thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Jones looks to move to half guard but instead James has passed into mount! Damn!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Jones tries to lock up and control but James gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Jones tries to reverse the position but James maintains control.
James pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Jones tries to hold on but James postures up.
James looking to control but Jones is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Jones sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
James content to control rather than advance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones blocking the ground and pound attempt from James.
James working over Jones with some ground and pound. Jones looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
James prevents Jones from improving his position.

James is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
James takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones is staying active underneath James, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Jones avoiding damage under a succession of punches from James.
Jones wants to improve his position but James is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Jones sees it coming and defends easily.
James wants to stand up but Jones is controlling the position.
Jones trying to hold on to James's head to control him but James postures up.
James trying to pass the guard but Jones defending well.
James sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Jones defending well though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
James missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Jones regains full guard. Nicely done.

James stands and steps away. Jones gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Jones shoots in and gets a takedown into James's guard.

James is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Jones scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but James is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Jones throws a strike but James rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Pepper James will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

and James counters with a lovely straight right hand!

James gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jones to score an easy takedown into full guard.
James is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

James scrambles and gets back to his feet.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Jones.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
James connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
James displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
Pepper James has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Russell Jones.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones throws a lazy head kick

and James counters with a head kick that drops Jones to the mat! Jones scrambles across the canvas and gets back to his feet, still wobbly!


Jones is rocked!
Jones is breathing heavily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
James Throws a clean left jab. James Twirls his body and connects with a Spinning Back Fist that connects flush with Jones's chin! Jones crumbles to the ground and James follows up with some unanswered strikes. It's all over!! Nice standup skills displayed by James!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:13 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Pepper James!
A very excited looking Pepper James made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
