PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Paul Gregory (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joaquim Williams (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gregory comes to the cage accompanied by Chumbawamba - English Rebel Songs. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Paul Gregory!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Joaquim Williams!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Anni Minnemäki and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gregory avoids a kick to the body.
Gregory fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Williams tries to work over Gregory's front leg with a kick but Gregory checks it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gregory.

Williams clinches up with Gregory and pushes him back against the cage.

Williams manages to break the clinch.
Gregory swats away the attempt to clinch by Williams.

Williams moves into the clinch.
Williams tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

and Gregory counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Williams!
This has been an exciting period of action!
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Gregory lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Gregory can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Williams is looking to escape.
Williams tries to hold on but Gregory pushes him away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Williams holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Gregory tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Williams prevents any damage by holding on tight.
Gregory unloads with some shots from mount but Williams bucks and avoids them well.
Gregory is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Williams can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Gregory connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Gregory wants to control the pace but Williams is squirming around nicely.
Williams avoids a strike by Gregory and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Gregory's guard! Fantastic escape!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Williams controls from within his opponent's guard.
Gregory wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Williams tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Joaquim Williams seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gregory misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Gregory takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Williams scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Williams tries to close the distance and clinch but Gregory swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Gregory is looking to score with low kicks.
Williams tries to clinch but Gregory is having none of it.
Gregory walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Williams throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Williams looks to throw the jab but Gregory is out of range.
Gregory shoots in looking for a takedown. Williams tries to sprawl out of it but Gregory keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Williams manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Gregory misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Gregory's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Gregory shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Williams sprawls well. Williams wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gregory gets slowly back to his feet.
Williams lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Gregory avoids the head kick by Williams.

Joaquim Williams showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Gregory shoots in looking for a takedown but Williams manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gregory's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Williams misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gregory.
Williams lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Williams tries to land a front kick but Gregory steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Gregory has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Williams finds it's way round the side to connect with Gregory's head.

Williams lands with a kick to the temple. Gregory shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Williams is looking to slow Gregory down with leg kicks.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gregory sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Gregory wants to pass to mount but Williams is defending the position.

Gregory thows a huge punch but Williams dodges it nicely.
Gregory is keen to just control but Williams is a slippery customer.

I think Williams has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
