The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Renato gets caught flat footed, as Mendes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Mendes keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Renato's head.
Mendes being controlled here momentarily.
Renato thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Mendes trying to control but Renato is working from the bottom.
Renato controls Mendes momentarily but Mendes frees himself.

Mendes got a little sloppy there for a moment and Renato has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mendes has managed to get both his arms back between Renato's legs - danger averted.
Mendes tries to stand but Renato is controlling from the bottom.
Mendes looking to sit in guard and control but Renato gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Mendes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Renato defends it easily.

Renato drops back looking for a leg! Mendes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mendes manages to kick Renato off! Renato jumps back into Mendes's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Mendes is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Renato is pressing down on Mendes's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Renato manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mendes manages to get himself to full guard.
