Machida is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Straight Out of Line. Lyoto Machida has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Vitor Alves's chin.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, John Kavanagh and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Machida will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Alves takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Machida throws a chopping leg kick but Alves manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Machida pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Machida throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Machida throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Alves tumbling to the canvas!
Alves is rocked!
Alves looking for a guillotine here but Machida defends easily.
Oh Alves is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Machida trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Machida wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Alves is looking for a kimura here.

Machida tries to kick Alves off but Alves keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Machida tries to bum rush Alves with a series of wild strikes but Alves uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Machida throws a head kick but Alves moves out of range.

Lyoto Machida is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Alves shoots in but Machida avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Machida is looking to slow Alves down with leg kicks.
Good leg kick by Machida there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Alves takes a jab right on the kisser.

Machida is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Alves shoots in and drives through. Machida sprawls well.
Alves tries for a takedown but Machida sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Machida lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Alves at a distance.
Alves tries for a takedown but Machida sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Machida misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Alves looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Machida is fending him off so far but Alves persists. Nope, Machida circles away and we're back to standing.
Alves avoids the body shot from Machida.
Machida connects with a vicious head kick that knocks Alves to the floor! Machida dives in looking for the finish!
Alves is pressing down on Machida's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Alves escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Machida gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Alves has a closed guard, preventing Machida from standing up.
Alves had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Machida is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Alves Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Machida's back instead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Alves looking for the choke but no joy.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Machida is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Alves gets his way!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
