Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Roy Nelson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Nelson swivels and escapes.
Velasquez shoots and misses

and Nelson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Velasquez won't be happy with that.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Nelson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Nelson trying to control the action but Velasquez is working from the bottom.
Sloppy strikes there by Nelson.

Nelson working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Velasquez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nelson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Nelson has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Velasquez!

Nelson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Velasquez really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Nelson in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Nelson lands a heavy elbow.
Nelson unloads with some shots from mount but Velasquez bucks and avoids them well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Nelson is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Velasquez can't stay in a position like this for much longer.


Velasquez is rocked!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nelson postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Velasquez looks a forlorn figure.
Velasquez is still in real trouble! Can Nelson finish him?

Nelson throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Velasquez has his hands clasped together but Nelson breaks the hold and Velasquez is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Nelson!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Roy Nelson!
