PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Derrick Rankinstein (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nogi Kartov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rankinstein kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Going Back To Cali by LL Cool J. Nogi Kartov has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Derrick Rankinstein!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nogi Kartov!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Ivan Kurochkin and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rankinstein stuffs the takedown attempt from Kartov. Kartov gets slowly back to his feet.
Kartov shoots for a takedown but Rankinstein saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Kartov misses with a body shot.
Kartov moves in looking to clinch but Rankinstein pushes him off.
Rankinstein misses with a hook. Kartov ducked under it nicely.
Kartov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Derrick Rankinstein has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nogi Kartov.

Kartov motions for Rankinstein to come forward. Kartov throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Rankinstein throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Kartov will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rankinstein misses with an uppercut. Kartov saw that one coming.

Kartov shoots in and drives through. Rankinstein sprawls well.
Kartov fails with a takedown attempt.
Rankinstein tries to clinch up but Kartov circles away and keeps his distance.

Rankinstein thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Kartov is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Kartov kicks Rankinstein off and gets back to his feet.

Rankinstein shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Kartov eats them both and turns towards Rankinstein to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Kartov shoots in but Rankinstein avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Rankinstein throws a looping overhand right but Kartov ducks down to avoid it.
Kartov is trying hard to land a takedown here. Rankinstein sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Rankinstein throws a wild body kick that Kartov sees coming a mile off.
Rankinstein throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Rankinstein misses with a wild combination.
Kartov throws a sloppy head kick and Rankinstein moves out of range easily.
Rankinstein leaves Kartov with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Rankinstein thuds his right hand into Kartov's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

and Kartov holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Rankinstein manages to break the clinch.

Kartov shoots in looking for a takedown. Rankinstein tries to sprawl out of it but Kartov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Rankinstein manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kartov shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rankinstein but Rankinstein pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Kartov closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rankinstein did well to prevent Kartov getting side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kartov shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Rankinstein sprawls well. Rankinstein wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kartov gets slowly back to his feet.

Rankinstein closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kartov's guard.

Rankinstein decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Kartov throws a series of punches but Rankinstein avoids them all with ease.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Rankinstein enables Kartov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Rankinstein manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Rankinstein is stalling here. Kartov is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Rankinstein seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Kartov has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Rankinstein keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Kartov takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Rankinstein lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Kartov misses with a body shot.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Derrick Rankinstein.
Well Rankinstein has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
