PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Teddy Exley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Pearson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jay Pearson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Teddy Exley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jay Pearson !
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Lou da Vinci and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pearson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Exley pinned against the cage. Exley gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Pearson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Pearson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Exley is working to avoid the ground and pound but Pearson connects with a decent elbow.

Pearson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Exley is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Pearson is looking to take a break and control but Exley is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pearson wants to stand but Exley is controlling his arm.
Pearson looks gassed!
Exley is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Pearson off and has taken his back!
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Pearson is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Exley gets his way!

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Exley is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Pearson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Exley is trying to stick to Pearson 's back but Pearson is turning into Exley. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Exley's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Pearson .

Exley looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Pearson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Exley working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pearson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pearson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Exley wants to sweep but no luck.
Exley controls Pearson momentarily but Pearson frees himself.
Pearson passes Exley's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Pearson is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Pearson is tying to control. Exley wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Pearson fails to land with a series of punches.
Exley shoots for a takedown but Pearson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Pearson counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends Exley down! Pearson is looking to finish but Exley is intelligently defending himself.

Pearson passes easily into side control. Nice work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Pearson stands up and beckons Exley to his feet.
Exley shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Pearson counters with a series of strikes that sends Exley to the canvas! Pearson follows down into guard, looking to finish the fight!
Oh Exley is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Pearson trying to control the position from guard on top but Exley is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Exley seems to have got his legs back now.

Pearson wants to stand but Exley is controlling his posture from full guard.

Pearson wants to stand but Exley has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Exley bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jay Pearson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Exley doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Pearson counters with a shoot takedown. Exley fights it but they end up in guard.

Pearson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Pearson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Teddy Exley overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pearson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Exley, up you get!
Teddy Exley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pearson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Pearson rushes Exley and presses him up against the ropes.
Pearson has had enough of the clinch but Exley keeps him there for the moment.
Pearson is looking to break free of the clinch but Exley has double underhooks.
Pearson wants to get back to striking at distance but Exley won't allow it.

Exley tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Pearson just stands there and leans against the ropes.

Exley shoots for a double leg takedown but Pearson sprawls well. He's pushed Exley's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Exley closes the distance and clinches up with Pearson , looking for a takedown. Exley pushes Pearson against the ropes but Pearson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Pearson connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Pearson fails to land the takedown.

Exley gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Exley wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Pearson tries to stand but can't do so whilst Exley controls his leg.

Pearson has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Exley defend it? Pearson steps over the head and cranks it - Exley is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Pearson !
