The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maynard lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Pierre circles away quickly and effectively.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Pierre enables Maynard to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Pierre manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Maynard wants to pass the guard but Pierre is keeping the position.

Pierre is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Maynard tries to free his leg and advance position but Pierre is retaining full guard.

Pierre working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Maynard doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Maynard manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Pierre escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maynard gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Maynard got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pierre has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Maynard has managed to get both his arms back between Pierre's legs - danger averted.

Pierre is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Maynard rolls with it to try and escape but Pierre cranks on the arm and Maynard is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
