Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hector Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Cairo!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alves gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Alves is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Alves is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Cairo is defending well for now.

Alves pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Alves tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Alves pushes Cairo up against the cage in a clinch.
Alves misses with a punch to the body.
Alves scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Alves using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Cairo has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Alves breaks from the clinch.
Alves tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Alves swings for the body but Cairo moves out of range.
Alves throws a big shot that misses.

Alves closes the distance and pushes Cairo back into the cage.
Alves lands an uppercut.
Alves content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Cairo manages to pull guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Cairo working for a triangle but Alves defends it easily.

Cairo working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Alves has passed into half guard!

Cairo looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Cairo pulls Alves in close to prevent any damage.
Cairo is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Cairo is working an open guard so Alves takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Alves.
Alves throws a head kick that misses

so Cairo counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Cairo has gone for a leg lock! Alves slips out almost immediately though and dives into Cairo's guard.

Alves decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Alves moves in looking to clinch but Cairo pushes him off.
A big left from Alves misses.
Alves throws a right and a left that Cairo avoids nicely.
Cairo has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Cairo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alves tries to avoid it but Cairo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alves to the ground. Alves escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Alves swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Cairo counters with a shoot takedown. Alves fights it but they end up in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Alves pulls Cairo in to control the position.
Alves is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cairo looking to sit in guard and control but Alves gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cairo looking for a guillotine here but Alves defends easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cairo working for submissions but it's allowed Alves to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Hector Alves will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Alves, as that shot connected.
Cairo shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Alves sprawls well. Alves wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Cairo gets slowly back to his feet.
Alves misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

A shot to the liver by Alves. Beautiful body shot.
Alves looks to land a combination but Cairo avoids it well.
Cairo takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Alves connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Alves moves in looking to clinch but Cairo pushes him off.
Alves throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cairo.
Cairo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Cairo shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Alves pinned against the cage. Alves gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hector Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Cairo.

Cairo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Alves manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Cairo is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Alves to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

Cairo drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Alves dives on top into guard.
Alves wants to stand but Cairo is controlling his posture from full guard.

Cairo is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Alves pulls his head out easily.

Cairo is looking for a sweep. Alves is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Alves tries to stand and escape but Cairo is controlling the position.
John Cairo has got the better of the ground game so far.
Cairo regains full guard. Nicely done.

Cairo is looking for a triangle here but Alves uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Alves decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Alves throws a hook but Cairo blocks it.
Alves pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Alves forces Cairo back against the cage and clinches.
Alves lands a hook to the side of the head.
Alves misses with a hook from the clinch.
Alves lands a shoulder strike.

Alves breaks the clinch.
Alves tries to clinch up.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cairo looks for a takedown but Alves sprawls well.
Alves with a body punch. A glancing blow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hector Alves dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Alves swings and misses with a hook to the body.
No luck for Cairo with that takedown attempt.
Cairo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Alves misses with a head kick.
Cairo digs a good hook to Alves's body.
Some bone on bone action there as Cairo checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

and Cairo counters with a shoot takedown. Alves fights it but they end up in guard.
Cairo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Alves works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Cairo drops back, looking for a kneebar! Alves looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Alves looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Alves!
Cairo is trying to control Alves's posture but Alves avoids it.

Cairo is looking to reverse the position.
Cairo is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Alves stands up and beckons Cairo to his feet.
Alves lands with a cross.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Alves.
Alves moves in looking to clinch but Cairo pushes him off.
Cairo ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Cairo slips a straight right by Alves.

Cairo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Alves did well to prevent Cairo getting side control.
Cairo throws a strike but Alves avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Alves keeping moving, preventing Cairo from controlling successfully.
Alves not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Cairo is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Alves is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Alves has escaped and now he's on top!

Cairo trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Alves decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cairo, up you get!
Cairo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Cairo slips a jab from Alves.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cairo swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Hector Alves is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Alves fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cairo manages to avoid it.
Alves throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Alves stuffs the takedown attempt from Cairo. Cairo gets slowly back to his feet.
Hector Alves is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Alves stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Cairo avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Cairo walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

Cairo chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Alves can pounce on him.
Cairo shoots in and drives through. Alves sprawls well.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Alves, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
