PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Stevenson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Buchanan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stevenson kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Buchanan is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Secret of Octopus. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joseph Stevenson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ray Buchanan!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Buchanan throws a head kick that misses.
Stevenson fails with a takedown attempt.
Stevenson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Stevenson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Stevenson is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Buchanan has managed to free his arm - good work.

Stevenson wants to pass the guard but Buchanan is defending well.
Buchanan is pressing down on Stevenson's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Stevenson frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Stevenson goes for an armbar but Buchanan turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Buchanan.
Buchanan connects with a couple of short punches.
Stevenson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Stevenson uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Stevenson gets a takedown into half guard.

Stevenson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Buchanan doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Stevenson.
Stevenson is breathing heavily.
Buchanan landing rabbit punches to the side of Stevenson's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points.

Buchanan is trying to get back to full guard.

Stevenson is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Buchanan has managed to free his arm - good work.

Stevenson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Stevenson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Stevenson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Buchanan manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Stevenson manages to get himself to full guard.

Stevenson is looking for a triangle but Buchanan pushes his legs off easily.
Buchanan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Stevenson avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Buchanan lands a couple of digs.
Stevenson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Buchanan's guard.
Buchanan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Stevenson is trying to get back to full guard.

Buchanan moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Stevenson.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stevenson can't do much from the bottom here.
Buchanan throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Stevenson gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Stevenson is pressing down on Buchanan's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Stevenson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Stevenson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Buchanan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Stevenson wants to control but Buchanan is keeping him busy.
Stevenson advances to full mount.
Buchanan is working to get back to half guard.

Stevenson is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Buchanan is forced to tap! Great finish!
