The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Alves scores with a couple of short elbows.
Ferguson on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Alves creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Ferguson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ferguson wants to control but Alves postures up.
Alves lands an elbow.
Alves is trying to get an arm triangle but Ferguson is defending well.
Ferguson wants to get back to his feet but Alves drags him back down.
Ferguson is looking to reverse the position.

Alves stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Ferguson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Alves napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Alves misses with an elbow from the bottom.
Alves has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Alves sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Alves kicks off Ferguson and gets to his feet.
Ferguson wants to clinch.
Alves slips a jab and a cross from Ferguson.

Alves takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Alves has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ferguson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Ferguson wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Alves's closed guard. He's half up but Alves has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Alves pivots and extends the arm, Ferguson falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Alves! Well done that man!
