PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jay Pound (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vladimir Nikolaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pound comes to the cage accompanied by When I'm Gone - Eminem. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jay Pound!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vladimir Nikolaev!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Illya Tyunina and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pound throws a body punch but Nikolaev moves out of range.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Pound has his takedown stuffed
and Nikolaev counters with a straight right hand.
Pound digs a good hook to Nikolaev's body.
Pound uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Nikolaev.
Vladimir Nikolaev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nikolaev displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Pound.
Nikolaev connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.


It looks like Jay Pound has been cut.
Nikolaev throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Nikolaev ducks under a wild hook from Pound.

Pound takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Pound closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Nikolaev did well to prevent Pound getting side control.
Nikolaev wants to get back to his feet.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Pound takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Pound's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jay Pound.

Pound dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Nikolaev slips a straight right by Pound.

and Nikolaev counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Nikolaev throws the left hand but Pound avoids the punch easily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Pound shoots for a double leg takedown but Nikolaev sprawls well. He's pushed Pound's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Nikolaev seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pound does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Nikolaev has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pound is trying to control but can't.
Nikolaev throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Nikolaev seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pound is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Nikolaev distracts Pound with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nikolaev wants to get back to his feet but Pound is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jay Pound wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Pound closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Nikolaev quickly recovers to half guard.
Nikolaev wants to get back to his feet.

Pound stalling away here and it's allowed Nikolaev to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Pound prevents Nikolaev from getting back to his feet.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Vladimir Nikolaev showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Nikolaev creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Nikolaev swings wildly with an uppercut but Pound uses good head movement to avoid it.

Nikolaev works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

An uppercut to the body lands inside from Nikolaev.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Nikolaev pushes Pound back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Nikolaev creates some distance for himselfand unleashes a massive uppercut that sends Pound's eyes rolling into the back of his head! Pound drops to his knees and Nikolaev pours it on with more strikes until the referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:14 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Vladimir Nikolaev!
