PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dan Wang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gi Gantas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dan Wang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gi Gantas!
The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Illya Tyunina and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wang clinches.

Wang pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Wang has Gantas up against the cage in a clinch.
Wang stalling in the clinch.

Wang tightens his grip and picks Gantas up, before dumping him to the ground. Gantas manages to land in guard.
Gantas keeping full guard, as Wang tries to pass.
Wang will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gantas wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Wang manages to pass to side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wang slows the pace down in half guard.
Gantas is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Wang jumps into side control!

Wang lands a few punches from side control.
Wang taking a breather here.
Wang has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Gantas is letting Wang control him for a moment.

Wang stands up and beckons Gantas to his feet.

Wang moves into the clinch successfully.

Wang pulls Gantas into guard.

Wang scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Gantas closes the distance looking to clinch

and Wang moves into the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gantas tries to break the clinch but Wang is controlling the position.

Wang gets control of Gantas's arms and successfully pulls guard. Wang will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Gantas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wang. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Wang manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Gantas can't escape the position.
Gantas looks gassed!
Wang controlling the pace for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Wang is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Gantas can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gantas has his takedown stuffed

and Wang counters with a single leg into guard. Gantas didn't expect that.
Wang is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Wang gets to his feet. Gantas looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Gantas shoots and misses

and Wang counters with a shoot takedown. Gantas fights it but they end up in guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wang seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Gantas is breathing heavily.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

We're going to have a standup here because Dan Wang wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Gantas fails with the takedown

and Wang counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Dan Wang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gi Gantas.
Wang works his foot free and advances to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wang takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Wang seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gantas for as long as he can get away with.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Wang cracks Gantas with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Wang jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Gantas manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Wang is staying tight to Gantas's torso, preventing him from escaping.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dan Wang dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Gantas sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Gantas shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Wang counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Wang.

Wang pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Wang feints and as Gantas raises his hands in defense, Wang changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Wang slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Wang pushes down on Gantas's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Gantas takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wang scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wang lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Wang is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gantas can do to turn this around?
Wang takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Wang passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Gantas!

Wang with shots to the head and body - Gantas looks very uncomfortable down there.
Wang scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Gantas?

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Wang's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dan Wang showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Wang has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
