PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Ashon Yates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter McBain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McBain has chosen Alien8 as his entrance music. Peter McBain will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ashon Yates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Peter McBain!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yates avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Yates on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
McBain listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Yates shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has McBain pinned against the cage. McBain gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
McBain tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Yates was well out of range. Poor timing from McBain.
A punch combination from McBain misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McBain scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Yates blocks a head kick by McBain.
McBain misses with a head kick.
No joy there for McBain, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Yates drives through with a takedown into guard.
Yates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

McBain is pulling down on Yates's head. It's preventing any offense from Yates, at least for the moment.

Peter McBain has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
McBain lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Yates circles away quickly and effectively.
Yates shoots in but no luck this time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Yates looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Yates with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Yates is trying to work for a kimura but McBain is defending well.
Yates is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Yates is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
McBain is trying to stand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Ashon Yates will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


McBain takes a swing at Yates's ribcage but misses.
Yates misses with a takedown attempt - McBain sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Peter McBain seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Yates will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
McBain misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McBain jabbing away but nothing is landing.
McBain feints a jab promting Yates to slip. McBain then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Yates slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.


It looks like Ashon Yates has been cut.

Yates dodges the punch combination from McBain.
Yates fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ashon Yates. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Yates has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from McBain.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Yates uses good head movement to avoid the hook from McBain.
McBain closes the distance and lands a one-two.
McBain lands with a hook. Yates tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Yates uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by McBain.
Yates fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

McBain throws a shot to the body.
McBain misses with a low kick as Yates jumps back.
A left lands for McBain.
Ashon Yates is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
McBain defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Yates.
Peter McBain seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Yates bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Yates is trying to get an arm triangle but McBain is defending well.
McBain is looking for a sweep.
McBain regains half guard.

Yates seems to be looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter McBain showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Ashon Yates's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Yates will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Yates shoots for a double leg takedown but McBain sprawls well. He's pushed Yates's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Yates displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as McBain throws out the jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nice takedown defense from McBain. No joy for Yates on that attempt.

Yates has a takedown stuffed.
McBain is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
McBain throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
McBain slaps away a takedown attempt from Yates, before circling back to the center of the mat.
McBain lands a nice hook to Yates's body. Yates takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McBain lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
McBain stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
McBain lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by McBain.
McBain moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Yates closes this distance looking for a takedown but McBain circles away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Yates tries to score a power double leg takedown but McBain sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Yates somewhat.
Good shot there by McBain.
McBain has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McBain lands with a cross.
Peter McBain is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
McBain takes a swing at Yates's ribcage but misses.
McBain lands a head kick. Yates smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Some wild striking there from McBain.
McBain misses the shot to the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
Peter McBain comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think McBain has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
