PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Trent Morrow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Trik Turner - Friends and Family. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Trent Morrow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Freddy Alves!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Edson Gomes and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some bone on bone action there as Alves checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Morrow throws a body kick that misses.
A combination from Alves does no damage.
Morrow throws out a loose jab but Alves uses good head movement to avoid it.
A looping hook to the body misses from Morrow. Alves does a little dance to reset his feet.
Trent Morrow seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alves lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Alves takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
A swing and a miss from Morrow.
Alves dips to his left and cracks Morrow with an uppercut!
The fighters circling - Morrow throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Alves tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Alves throws a hook to the side of Morrow's head but Morrow sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Alves throws a looping overhand right but Morrow ducks down to avoid it.
Alves walks forward, straight into a front kick from Morrow.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Morrow throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Morrow dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Morrow tried to score with a low kick but Alves checks it.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Alves crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Morrow - the referee stops the clock and Alves gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Morrow. Alves manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Alves shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Alves throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Morrow to regain full guard.
Morrow is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Morrow looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alves is one step ahead there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Morrow keeping moving, preventing Alves from controlling successfully.
Morrow is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Morrow avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Alves trying to control but Morrow is working from the bottom.

Freddy Alves has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Morrow throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Morrow misses with a body kick.
Alves connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Morrow's hands.
Morrow fails with a takedown attempt.
Morrow shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Alves pinned against the cage. Alves gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Morrow showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Alves.
Morrow throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Nice shot lands for Morrow.

Morrow scores with a hook.
Alves walks into a jab.
Morrow with a hook.
Morrow throws a body punch but Alves moves out of range.
Morrow just misses with a punch to the body.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Morrow paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Morrow throws a body kick that misses.
Morrow misses with a body shot.
Morrow staying out of range there.
Morrow throws a leg kick which misses Alves's front leg but catches the back leg as Alves tries to avoid it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
A telegraphed right hand from Morrow misses the target.
Alves misses with a two punch combination.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Alves throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Morrow dips to his left and cracks Alves with an uppercut!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Trent Morrow will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Morrow will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Morrow connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Morrow lands a slapping body shot.
Morrow misses with an uppercut
and Alves counters with a straight right hand.
Morrow connects with an inside leg kick.
Morrow lands with a nice body punch.
Alves misses with a series of wild punches.
Alves scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Morrow.

Morrow is wriggling around trying to escape.

Alves tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Morrow throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Morrow keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Morrow sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Morrow is looking to improve his position.
Morrow is pressing down on Alves's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Morrow is trying to control the position but Alves postures up.

Morrow throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Morrow trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Alves working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Morrow's head.
Morrow is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Morrow wants to sweep here but Alves controlling him for the moment.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Morrow wants to control but Alves passes easily into half guard.

Morrow is looking for a sweep. Alves is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Alves takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Morrow is staying active underneath Alves, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Morrow moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Alves throws an elbow that misses. Morrow uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Alves's guard. Nice move by Morrow!

Morrow is working Alves over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Morrow passes Alves's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Morrow wants to control but Alves is keeping him busy.
Trent Morrow overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Morrow blocks the strikes from Alves.
Alves is trying to stand.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That was a close second round but I would say that Trent Morrow will probably get the nod.

Alves shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Alves was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Morrow is looking to improve his position but Alves isn't that keen on the idea.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Alves passes into side control, despite Morrow's attempt to control the position.
Alves in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Morrow is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Morrow tries to roll over but Alves keeps him under control.
Morrow has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Alves is working away from the top position though.
Alves slips a nice elbow through Morrow's hands, connecting with Morrow's forehead.
Well, if Alves is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Alves lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Morrow manages to get to full guard.
Morrow wants to sweep but no luck.
Morrow keeping moving, preventing Alves from controlling successfully.

Morrow is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Alves is aware though and is defending well.
Morrow is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Alves looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Morrow is pressing down on Alves's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Morrow is trying to keep Alves in close.
Morrow pulls Alves in close to his closed guard and prevents Alves from doing any damage or advancing position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Morrow has momentary wrist control but Alves slips an elbow through the middle.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Freddy Alves.
Well Morrow has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
