PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mark Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Flynn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cruz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Alert to the armory. Kevin Flynn will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mark Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kevin Flynn!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Flynn gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Cruz to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Flynn wants to stand but Cruz is controlling the position.
Cruz working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Cruz throws a big elbow that misses.
Cruz works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Cruz landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cruz slips a nice elbow through Flynn's hands, connecting with Flynn's forehead.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cruz in particular looking to stall.
Cruz's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cruz connects with a nice short shot to Flynn's temple.

Cruz is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Flynn has managed to free his arm - good work.

Cruz lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Cruz seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Flynn for as long as he can get away with.
Flynn is trying to stand up here but Cruz is controlling him well.

Flynn wants to control but Cruz is keeping busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Flynn manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cruz takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Flynn thows a body shot but no joy.

Cruz instigates a clinch.
Flynn is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Cruz misses with a body punch.
Cruz blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Cruz goes for a takedown attempt but Flynn pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

so Cruz counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Cruz is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Flynn is trying to control the position but Cruz postures up.
Cruz will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cruz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Flynn will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Cruz is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Flynn wants to break the clinch but can't.

Cruz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cruz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Cruz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Cruz pushes Flynn off and scrambles back to his feet.
Flynn misses with a few strikes there.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Flynn is defended easily by Cruz.

and Cruz decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Flynn's guard.
Flynn is breathing heavily.

Flynn controls Cruz momentarily but Cruz frees himself.

Cruz is in close to Flynn's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Cruz chips away with some ground and pound.
Cruz stands and throws Flynn's legs to the side, diving into side control.
A lull in the action here.
Cruz advances nicely into full mount.

Cruz controlling the position easily from mount.
Flynn slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cruz lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Cruz is taking a breather. Flynn says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Flynn is looking to control Cruz's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Flynn avoid being mounted?
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cruz perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Flynn makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Flynn.
Cruz postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! And we move into the final round!

Cruz tries to free his leg and advance position but Flynn is retaining full guard.
Cruz controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Cruz postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Cruz keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Flynn's head.

Cruz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Cruz engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Flynn thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Flynn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cruz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Flynn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Cruz advances position into side control!
Flynn is letting Cruz control him for a moment.
Flynn tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Cruz wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Cruz is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Flynn knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Cruz takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cruz fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
The referee warns Flynn that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kevin Flynn has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Cruz cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

And that's the end of the fight!
Mark Cruz showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cruz, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
