PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kelvin Fonte (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brett Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fonte's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, carnage. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kelvin Fonte!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brett Martin!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martin misses with a takedown

and Fonte counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Fonte.
Martin utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Martin stalling in the clinch but Fonte improves position.

Martin pulls guard successfully.
Fonte will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Fonte stays in close to Martin's body and controls the position.
Fonte looking to sit in guard and control but Martin gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Fonte knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Martin on the ground.
Martin forces his way into half guard.

Martin lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Fonte pushes Martin off looking to stand but Martin dives back in and keeps control.
Martin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Fonte's head.
Martin is trying to control the action in half guard but Fonte is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Fonte is trying to control but Martin manages to pass to mount!
Fonte is looking to improve his position but Martin isn't that keen on the idea.

Fonte is in all sorts of trouble here.
Martin lands a big elbow.
Martin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Fonte is looking to escape.

Fonte is breathing heavily.
Fonte is wriggling around trying to escape.
Martin has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Fonte's face.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Martin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Fonte tries to hold on but Martin pushes him away.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Martin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Fonte stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Martin.
Brett Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Fonte clinches up with Martin and pushes him back against the cage.

Martin jumps guard but Fonte turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Kelvin Fonte has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brett Martin.
Martin is breathing heavily.

Martin manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

We're going to have a standup here because Kelvin Fonte wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Fonte feints and as Martin raises his hands in defense, Fonte changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Fonte tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Martin manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Fonte closes the distance and clinches.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Fonte has clasped his hands together around Martin's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Fonte controls the position.
Martin stops Fonte from passing to mount.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Fonte breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Martin throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Martin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Fonte lands a head kick. Martin smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Martin tries to bum rush Fonte with a series of wild strikes but Fonte uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Martin throws a low kick but Fonte moves out of range easily.

Martin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Fonte staying out of range there.

Fonte fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Martin sprawls well initially but Fonte persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Fonte looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Fonte wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Martin uses the opportunity to regain full guard.
Martin is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Fonte is controlling him.

Martin is trying to control the position but Fonte postures up.
Fonte slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Fonte wants to clinch up but Martin keeps it at a distance.

Fonte closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Martin quickly recovers to half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kelvin Fonte wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Martin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Fonte manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Martin looking to sit in guard and control but Fonte gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Martin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Fonte's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
