PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Craken Skulls (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Davey Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Davey Griffin will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Craken Skulls!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Davey Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Steve Smith and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Griffin swinging wildly here.
Griffin thuds his right hand into Skulls's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Griffin lands a two punch combo.
Griffin closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Griffin misses with a double jab.
Some wild striking there from Griffin.
Griffin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Griffin throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Griffin cracks Skulls with a good jab.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Skulls looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Skulls is working for a kimura but Griffin is defending it quite comfortably.

Skulls throwing shots but Griffin is blocking nicely.
Still in half guard, Skulls seems content to control.
Griffin is looking to control Skulls's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Griffin avoid being mounted?
Griffin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Skulls. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Skulls is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Skulls in particular looking to stall.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Griffin throws a right and a left that Skulls avoids nicely.
Skulls shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Griffin sprawls well. Griffin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Skulls gets slowly back to his feet.

Skulls has managed to clinch.
Griffin stalling in the clinch but Skulls improves position.

Skulls pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Griffin throws a nice looking combination but Skulls bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Skulls fails with a takedown attempt.

Griffin gets tackled into the cage by Skulls. Skulls maintains the clinch.
Griffin wants to get back to striking at distance but Skulls won't allow it.
Skulls tries to score a body lock takedown but Griffin shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Come on Skulls - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Skulls turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Skulls manages to end up in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Griffin gets back to half guard.
Skulls is breathing heavily.
Griffin preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Skulls is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Davey Griffin will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Skulls shoots in but no luck this time.

Skulls closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Skulls is working for takedown but Griffin is calmly controlling the position for now.
Griffin misses with an elbow strike.
A frustrated look appears on Griffin's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Griffin has clasped his hands together around Skulls's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Skulls struggling a bit here.

Griffin wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Skulls, who protects the arm well.

Skulls manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Skulls preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Skulls misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Skulls is trying to control but can't.
Griffin is looking to stall here but Skulls recovers full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Craken Skulls wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Griffin throws a right and a left that Skulls avoids nicely.
Skulls drops his hands momentarily and Griffin takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Griffin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Skulls shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Griffin pinned against the cage. Griffin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Craken Skulls. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Griffin goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.


It looks like Craken Skulls has been cut.
Griffin swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Sloppy strikes from Griffin. Those never looked like landing.
Griffin throws a series of punches but Skulls avoids them all with ease.
Griffin will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Skulls on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Griffin misses with the combination.
A punch combination from Griffin misses.
Griffin throws a right and a left that Skulls avoids nicely.
Griffin throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Skulls.
Griffin smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Skulls shoots in and bounces Griffin off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Skulls working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Griffin's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Davey Griffin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Skulls is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Griffin is trying to control but can't.

Skulls is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Griffin doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Skulls.

Griffin is trying to get back to full guard.

Craken Skulls overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Griffin wants to improve his position but Skulls is controlling well.
Griffin is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Skulls scores with a couple of nice shots.

Griffin is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Skulls controlling the pace for now.
Griffin tries to lock up and control but Skulls gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Griffin wants to hold on but Skulls pushes him away.
Skulls takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Craken Skulls has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Skulls is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Skulls extends the arm and Griffin is forced to tap!
