PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jon Tharis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aaron Koscheck (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tharis comes to the cage accompanied by Burning down the house. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Tharis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Aaron Koscheck!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Hugh Johnson and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tharis closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Koscheck did well to prevent Tharis getting side control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Koscheck tries to roll over but Tharis keeps him under control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Koscheck wants to control but Tharis is keeping busy.
Tharis stops Koscheck from getting back to his feet.
Koscheck throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Koscheck avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tharis.
Tharis throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Tharis trying to control the action but Koscheck is working from the bottom.
Tharis wants to pass to mount but Koscheck is defending the position.
Tharis is thwarting Koscheck's attempts to control the position.
Tharis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Koscheck keeps working.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Koscheck counters with a single leg into guard. Tharis didn't expect that.

Tharis had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Koscheck defends it easily.
Koscheck is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Tharis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Koscheck manages to get himself to full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Koscheck has his foot on Tharis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Tharis works his way back into a safe position though.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Koscheck holds on and takes a little breather.

Koscheck uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Koscheck shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Tharis as he jumps to the side.
Tharis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Koscheck paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Tharis fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Koscheck, pushing him back against the cage.

Tharis is fighting off a takedown attempt but Koscheck is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Tharis to the mat. Tharis regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Koscheck wants to control from the top but Tharis keeps moving.

Tharis is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Koscheck pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Tharis is keeping the position for now.

Koscheck controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Tharis is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Koscheck defends well.

Koscheck tries to free his leg and advance position but Tharis is retaining full guard.
Koscheck wants to control from the top but Tharis keeps moving.

Tharis escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Koscheck gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aaron Koscheck dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Koscheck pushes Tharis up against the cage in a clinch.
Tharis tries to throw a body punch but Koscheck avoids it by throwing Tharis back against the cage.
Tharis is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Koscheck drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Tharis gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Tharis is striking but Koscheck is not phased and passes to half guard.
Tharis wants to improve his position but Koscheck is controlling well.
Tharis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Koscheck is working away from the top position though.

Tharis is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Koscheck tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Tharis is looking to improve his position but Koscheck isn't that keen on the idea.

Tharis might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Koscheck has hold of Tharis's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Tharis manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Koscheck can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Tharis is looking to escape.

Tharis is trying desperately to improve position.
Tharis's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Tharis is looking to improve his position but Koscheck isn't that keen on the idea.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aaron Koscheck showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Tharis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Tharis throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Let's hope that Koscheck has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Tharis shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Koscheck as he avoids it easily.

Tharis fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Koscheck avoids it really well and circles away.
Jon Tharis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Koscheck changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tharis tries to avoid it but Koscheck manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tharis to the ground. Tharis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jon Tharis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aaron Koscheck.

Jon Tharis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Koscheck takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Tharis shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Tharis throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Aaron Koscheck is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.


It looks like Aaron Koscheck has been cut.
Tharis throwing strikes here but Koscheck is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
