PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between David Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Helder Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cruz has chosen Vai Rivaldo sai desse lago as his entrance music. Helder Cruz looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, David Evans!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Helder Cruz!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Evans feints and as Cruz raises his hands in defense, Evans changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Cruz looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Evans stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cruz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Evans gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Evans throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Cruz tries to clinch up but Evans circles away and keeps his distance.

Evans moves into the clinch successfully.

Evans manages to break the clinch.

Evans darts in and clinches Cruz up against the cage.

Evans jumps into guard, dragging Cruz to the mat.
Cruz is fighting to break Evans's control of his arms but Evans is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Evans will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Cruz won't allow Evans to get back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Evans has his foot on Cruz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cruz works his way back into a safe position though.

Cruz has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Evans is proving hard to escape from.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Evans wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Helder Cruz was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Evans throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Evans manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Cruz should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Evans is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Evans on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Evans tries to get out of the position.

Evans knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cruz on the ground.
Evans is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Cruz gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Cruz throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Evans moves into the clinch.
Cruz wants to get back to striking at distance but Evans won't allow it.

Evans lands a takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Evans postures up and lands a big shot to Cruz's brow.
Cruz wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Evans is now in half guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cruz is looking to improve his position.

Evans feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Evans decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cruz, up you get!

Evans decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Evans lands a nice short elbow.
Evans takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Evans is trying to work for a kimura but Cruz is defending well.
Cruz tries to get to full guard but Evans has control of the leg.
Evans looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Evans shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cruz napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Cruz tries to bench press Evans off him but Evans keeps the position.

Evans works to advance to full mount. Cruz defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Evans has Cruz up against the cage in a clinch.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Evans.

Evans gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Cruz regains guard.
Evans passes into half guard.

Evans is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Evans decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Evans shoots in and gets a takedown into Cruz's guard.
Evans tries to free his leg and advance position but Cruz is retaining full guard.
Evans is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Cruz is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Evans defends well.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Evans in particular looking to stall.
Cruz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Evans bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Well Evans has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
