PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sam Miguel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bert Ernie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 14 - 0, fighting out of London, Sam Miguel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 26 - 0, fighting out of London, Bert Ernie!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Andrew Berry and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Miguel avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Ernie has taken the fight to the clinch.
Ernie is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Miguel breaks from the clinch.
Ernie fails with the takedown.
Ernie looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Ernie lands with an uppercut that bounces Miguel off the cage and back into range.
Miguel wants to clinch but Ernie slips to the side
and Ernie counters with an outside leg kick.
Ernie shoots for a takedown but Miguel saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sam Miguel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bert Ernie.
Ernie looks gassed!
Ernie takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Ernie tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Miguel paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Miguel shoots in for a takedown but Ernie shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Miguel leaves Ernie with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Miguel closes the distance and pushes Ernie back into the cage.

Ernie drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Miguel gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Ernie has clasped his hands together around Miguel's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
I wouldn't like to be where Miguel is right now.

Ernie goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Miguel rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Ernie's guard! Nice work there by Miguel!
Miguel with a flurry of punches that miss.
Miguel missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Miguel wants to stand but Ernie is controlling his posture from full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ernie has his foot on Miguel's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Miguel works his way back into a safe position though.
Miguel wants to stand but Ernie has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Ernie wants to sweep here but Miguel controlling him for the moment.
Miguel won't allow Ernie to get back to his feet.
Miguel has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Miguel lands a couple of decent looking shots.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Miguel has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Ernie is proving hard to escape from.

Miguel trying to control the position from guard on top but Ernie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Miguel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ernie swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ernie has a closed guard, preventing Miguel from standing up.
Ernie lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Miguel!
Miguel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Ernie prevents Miguel from getting the reversal.

Ernie moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Miguel has worked his arm free - good work by Miguel!

Ernie is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Miguel has escaped the position, nice work there.
Miguel is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Miguel is trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Bert Ernie will probably get the nod.
That's time! Miguel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Miguel wants to clinch up but Ernie keeps it at a distance.
Miguel displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ernie.
Ernie shoots in for a takedown but Miguel shows good takedown defense.

Miguel shoots in and bounces Ernie off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Miguel tries to free his leg and advance position but Ernie is retaining full guard.

Ernie not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ernie is pulling down on Miguel's head to control his posture.

Miguel stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Miguel scores a takedown into full mount!
Ernie wants to control but Miguel is having none of it.
Miguel breaks from Ernie's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Miguel has hold of Ernie's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Ernie manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Ernie tries to hold on but Miguel pushes him away.

Miguel tries to control but Ernie wriggling away.
Miguel throws some wild stikes that Ernie manages to avoid easily.
Ernie is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Ernie is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Ernie is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
A nice elbow there by Miguel.

Miguel lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

The referee warns Ernie that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Ernie wants to control but Miguel is having none of it.

Miguel fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Sam Miguel overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Ernie wants to control but Miguel is having none of it.

Sam Miguel dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Miguel shoots in looking for a takedown. Ernie tries to sprawl out of it but Miguel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Ernie manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sam Miguel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Miguel rushes Ernie and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Miguel is pressed up against the cage. Ernie has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Miguel down to the mat. Miguel avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Ernie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That kick from Miguel tenderised Ernie's leg. Ernie is trying to keep his angry face on.
Ernie keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Miguel shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sam Miguel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ernie looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Miguel is looking to improve his position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Well, if Ernie is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Ernie throwing shots but Miguel is blocking nicely.
Miguel moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Miguel manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Miguel displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ernie.

Ernie gets the takedown into side control.

Ernie wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Miguel, who protects the arm well.
Miguel is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Ernie's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Ernie is working for a kimura but Miguel is defending it quite comfortably.

Miguel is looking for a sweep. Ernie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Miguel regains full guard. Nicely done.

Miguel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ernie decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Miguel, up you get!
Sam Miguel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ernie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Ernie closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Miguel quickly recovers to half guard.
Ernie drops an elbow to the side of Miguel's head.

Ernie is trying to work for a kimura but Miguel is defending well.
Miguel is not content to let Ernie control the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ernie might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Miguel kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bert Ernie comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Ernie has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
