PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matty Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Walt Potter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Potter has chosen Emalkay - When I Look At You as his entrance music. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matty Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 10 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Walt Potter!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Elvis Blanc and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson misses with an uppercut. Potter saw that one coming.
Johnson listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Potter looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Potter tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Johnson swivels and escapes.
Johnson misses with an uppercut.
Johnson paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johnson cracks a nice hook into Potter's ribs.
Potter uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Johnson.
Potter scores with a decent looking hook.


It looks like Matty Johnson has been cut.
Johnson fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Potter.
Potter fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Matty Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Walt Potter.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Johnson looking to control but Potter is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Potter turns into him and now he's in Johnson's guard.

Johnson looking for a guillotine here but Potter defends easily.

Potter avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Potter working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Johnson's head.

Potter got a little sloppy there for a moment and Johnson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Potter has managed to get both his arms back between Johnson's legs - danger averted.

Johnson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Potter is aware though and is defending well.

Johnson working for a triangle but Potter defends it easily.

Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Potter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Potter engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Potter trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Potter is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Potter in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Potter postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Johnson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Potter defends well.
Potter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Johnson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Potter wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.

Johnson looking for a sweep. Not yet Johnson, not yet.
Potter trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Potter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Johnson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Potter defends it easily.

Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Potter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Johnson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Johnson utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Johnson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Potter is aware though and is defending well.
Potter trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Potter is looking to work some ground and pound but Johnson has wrist control.
Potter trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Potter working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Potter sitting in guard here, content to control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Johnson keeping moving, preventing Potter from controlling successfully.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Walt Potter hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Potter shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johnson as he avoids it easily.
Johnson throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Johnson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Potter.
Johnson looks for a takedown but Potter sprawls well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!


Horrible takedown by Potter or perhaps it was just good defense by Johnson which made him look bad.
Johnson throws a hook to the side of Potter's head but Potter sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Potter pinned against the cage. Potter gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Johnson enables Potter to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Johnson manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Johnson can't keep his opponent in guard - Potter advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Potter not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Potter lands strikes from half guard.
Johnson is looking to improve his position.
Johnson is looking to control Potter's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Johnson avoid being mounted?
Johnson wants to improve his position but Potter is controlling well.

Potter is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Johnson is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Potter wants to control but Johnson is keeping him busy.
Potter content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Johnson misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Potter lands strikes from half guard.
Johnson wants to control the action here but instead Potter manages to pass to full mount!
Potter lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Johnson is in a horrible position here. Potter smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Potter controlling the position easily from mount.
Walt Potter has got the better of the ground game so far.

Johnson regains half guard.
Potter thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Johnson's head.
Potter not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Potter looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Johnson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Johnson is staying active underneath Potter, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Potter is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Potter trying to mount his opponent but Johnson defends it.
Potter is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Johnson wants to control but Potter is having none of it.
Potter landing shots from mount.

Johnson taking shots to the head.
Potter cracks Johnson with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Johnson tries to lock up and control but Potter gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Johnson keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Potter breaks from Johnson's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Potter postures up and lands a whopping elbow - oh that's hurt Johnson bigstyle! Two more strikes land for Potter and the fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Walt Potter!
