PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Takanori Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dong Bae Mok (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomi comes to the cage accompanied by Scary. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takanori Gomi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Dong Bae Mok!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mok tests Gomi's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Gomi throws a hook to the side of Mok's head but Mok sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Mok fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Gomi manages to avoid it.
Gomi looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Mok bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Mok throws a head kick that half lands.
Mok throws a right hand that misses
and Gomi counters with a three punch combo that has Mok backing up. Mok nods at Gomi to acknowledge the strikes.
Mok throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Mok gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gomi to score an easy takedown into full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Gomi postures up in Mok's guard and throws a big left but Mok blocks it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gomi drops back looking for a leg! Mok is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mok manages to kick Gomi off! Gomi jumps back into Mok's guard.

Mok is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Gomi jumps into side control!

Gomi is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Mok is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Mok uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gomi.

Gomi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mok sprawls well. Mok wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gomi gets slowly back to his feet.

Gomi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mok was covering up waiting for the punch and Gomi finishes the takedown easily into guard.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Gomi shoots in looking for a takedown. Mok tries to sprawl out of it but Gomi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mok manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gomi, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Takanori Gomi decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
