PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dan Larson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexey Shishkin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Larson kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Sweet Child of Mine. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 15 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dan Larson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 21 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexey Shishkin!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Aleksandr Martynov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shishkin tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Larson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Larson looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Larson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Shishkin to the ground. Larson is now in Shishkin's guard.
Larson wants to control from the top but Shishkin keeps moving.

Shishkin looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Shishkin is pulling down on Larson's head to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shishkin working for a triangle but Larson defends it easily.
Larson wants to control from the top but Shishkin keeps moving.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Larson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Larson tries to free his leg and advance position but Shishkin is retaining full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Dan Larson.

Larson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shishkin manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Larson wants to stand but Shishkin has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Larson wants to control from the top but Shishkin keeps moving.

Shishkin is looking for a triangle but Larson pushes his legs off easily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Shishkin is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Larson is looking for a kimura but Shishkin is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Larson to get the leverage.
Shishkin is looking for a sweep. Larson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Larson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shishkin is just riding it out for now. Larson eventually gives up the hold.

Larson is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shishkin has managed to free his arm - good work.
Larson working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Shishkin is refusing to be controlled, as Larson sits in half guard.

Larson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Shishkin doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Larson.

Larson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shishkin keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Larson tries for a takedown but Shishkin sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Larson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A head kick misses from Shishkin.
Shishkin scores with a nice body kick.
Shishkin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Larson's waist but Larson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Shishkin off to one side.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Larson crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Shishkin - the referee stops the clock and Larson gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Shishkin. Larson manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Shishkin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Larson as he jumps to the side.
Horrible takedown by Larson or perhaps it was just good defense by Shishkin which made him look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dan Larson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shishkin avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Larson avoids the head kick by Shishkin.
Larson connects with a single shot there.
Shishkin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Larson displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Shishkin throws out the jab.

and Larson counters with a shoot takedown. Shishkin fights it but they end up in guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Larson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shishkin swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Shishkin has his foot on Larson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Larson works his way back into a safe position though.
Shishkin is breathing heavily.
Larson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Larson makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Larson postures up and lands a big shot to Shishkin's brow.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Shishkin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Larson uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.


It looks like Alexey Shishkin has been cut.
Shishkin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Larson moves away.
Shishkin takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Shishkin throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Larson was covering up waiting for the punch and Shishkin finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Shishkin wants to control from the top but Larson keeps moving.

Larson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shishkin doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shishkin manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shishkin has gone for a leg lock! Larson slips out almost immediately though and dives into Shishkin's guard.
Shishkin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Larson throws an overhand right that lands on Shishkin's shoulder, as Shishkin tries to avoid the shot.

Larson lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Shishkin misses with a hook.

Shishkin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Larson throws out the jab.

Shishkin is rocked!
Larson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shishkin sprawls well. Shishkin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Larson gets slowly back to his feet.
Shishkin is still on wobbly legs! Can Larson finish him?

Larson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shishkin sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Larson somewhat.
Alexey Shishkin has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dan Larson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Larson dives in and grabs Shishkin's left leg, looking for a takedown. Shishkin pushes down on Larson's head and hops out.
Shishkin seems to have recovered his senses.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Larson is defended easily by Shishkin.

Well Larson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Dan Larson decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
