Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joel Sands (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robson Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Joel Sands seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sands tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mendes paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Sands shoots in but Mendes avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Nice cross by Sands.
Mendes throws a solid leg kick but Sands takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Mendes.
Sands avoids a punch combination nicely.
Mendes throws a body kick that misses.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Sands, as that shot connected.
Sands throws a series of strikes that have Mendes backpedaling.
Mendes throws a right hand that Sands ducks under and follows up with a left that Sands also avoids with ease.
Mendes slaps away a takedown attempt from Sands, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

That kick from Sands tenderised Mendes's leg. Mendes is trying to keep his angry face on.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Sands checks a leg kick.
Sands fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mendes avoids it really well and circles away.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Mendes thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Mendes postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Sands is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mendes, into his guard.

Sands is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mendes defends it well.

This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sands wants to free his trapped foot but Mendes is holding on for dear life with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Mendes in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.
Mendes looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Sands fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Sands tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mendes swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Sands throws a combination. Mendes tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mendes swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Sands fails with a takedown attempt.

Sands changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mendes tries to avoid it but Sands manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mendes to the ground. Mendes escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Joel Sands is winning the standup battle so far.
Mendes throws a nice looking combination but Sands bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Sands shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Mendes eats them both and turns towards Sands to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Sands manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Sands tries to score a body lock takedown but Mendes shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Sands escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Mendes throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Sands.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Sands tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mendes just stands there and leans against the cage.

Mendes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mendes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Mendes is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Mendes is trying to work for a kimura but Sands is defending well.

Mendes is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sands is just riding it out for now. Mendes eventually gives up the hold.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Joel Sands.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sands, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
