The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spanner takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Spanner rushes KZ and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Spanner lands on the inside with an uppercut.
KZ tries to pull guard but Spanner won't allow it.
Spanner is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

KZ has clasped his hands together around Spanner's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Spanner is not content to let KZ control the position.
Spanner wants to control but KZ postures up.

KZ tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no KZ has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
KZ is looking to take a break and control but Spanner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

KZ creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Spanner sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spanner throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Spanner wants to work for an arm triangle but KZ is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
KZ has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Spanner is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and KZ defends it well.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Spanner lands a nice short elbow.
KZ is staying active underneath Spanner, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
KZ manages to get to full guard.
Spanner won't allow KZ to sweep him here.

KZ has his foot on Spanner's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Spanner works his way back into a safe position though.
