PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Clarkson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damian Nitschke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ryan Clarkson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Damian Nitschke!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Bruno Hogan and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nitschke looks to throw the jab but Clarkson is out of range.
Clarkson dives in and grabs Nitschke's left leg, looking for a takedown. Nitschke pushes down on Clarkson's head and hops out.
Clarkson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nitschke tries to avoid it but Clarkson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nitschke to the ground. Nitschke escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Clarkson blocks a jab.
Clarkson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Nitschke's waist but Nitschke gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Clarkson off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Clarkson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Clarkson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Nitschke's guard.

Nitschke has his foot on Clarkson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Clarkson works his way back into a safe position though.

Nitschke is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Clarkson is aware though and is defending well.

Clarkson wants to take a breather but Nitschke is having none of it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Clarkson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Nitschke sees it coming and defends easily.

Nitschke regains full guard. Nicely done.

Nitschke working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Clarkson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Clarkson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Clarkson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nitschke swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Nitschke escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Clarkson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Clarkson wants to control from the top but Nitschke keeps moving.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Clarkson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Clarkson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Nitschke had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Clarkson defends it easily.

Nitschke has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Clarkson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Clarkson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

A close round but Damian Nitschke will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Clarkson throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Nitschke tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Clarkson is in Nitschke's guard.
Damian Nitschke has got the better of the ground game so far.
Clarkson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nitschke swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Clarkson sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Nitschke's guard.

Clarkson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Nitschke sees it coming and defends easily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nitschke wants to control but Clarkson is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Nitschke is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Clarkson pulls his head out easily.
Nitschke is staying active underneath Clarkson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Clarkson is looking for a kimura but Nitschke is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Clarkson to get the leverage.
Nitschke is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Clarkson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Clarkson's back!

Clarkson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Nitschke doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Clarkson.
Clarkson is trying to control the action in half guard but Nitschke is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Clarkson is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Nitschke is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

A relieved looking Ryan Clarkson thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
