PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Phantom Menace (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aldo Raine (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Menace comes to the cage accompanied by Leroy Brown. The crowd seem to be enjoying Raine's choice of entrance music: Slaughter - Billy Preston. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Menace throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A decent looking cross lands there for Menace.
A swing and a miss from Menace.
Raine takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Raine throws a solid leg kick but Menace takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Raine.
A solid leg kick lands there for Raine.
Menace with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Menace misses with a looping left.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Raine. Menace shrugs it off though.
Raine takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

This has been an exciting period of action!

and Raine counters with a nice low kick that buckles Menace's knee momentarily.

Menace fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Raine checks it well.

Raine doesn't manage to clinch there - Menace circles away.
Raine connects with a good right hand that stumbles Menace. Menace circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Raine wants to clinch up but Menace keeps it at a distance.

Phantom Menace seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Menace feints and then cracks Raine's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Raine down.

Menace feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Menace accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Raine throws out a loose jab but Menace uses good head movement to avoid it.
Menace connects with a jab.
Menace misses with a looping left.

Raine misses with a hook. Menace ducked under it nicely.
Menace throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Menace tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Raine was well out of range. Poor timing from Menace.

The fighters circling - Raine throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Nice uppercut lands for Menace. That snapped Raine's head back.

Menace takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Phantom Menace is winning the standup battle so far.
Menace throws a good cross that connects.
Menace connects with a leg kick. Raine looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Menace lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Menace does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
The fight stays on the outside here - Raine looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Menace bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Raine's head backwards.

and Menace takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Raine has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Menace finds it's way round the side to connect with Raine's head.

Menace fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Raine manages to avoid it.
Raine moves out of range of the leg kick from Menace.
Raine tries to clinch up.
Raine uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Menace.

Menace throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Raine sees it coming and avoids it easily.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Raine has closed the distance and engaged Menace in a clinch.

Raine is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Menace is defending well for now.

Menace has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Raine wants to pass the guard but Menace is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

and Menace makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Good leg kick by Raine there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Menace scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Menace changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Raine looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Menace tries to score with some ground and pound. Raine controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Raine prevents Menace from moving into mount.
Raine manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Well, if Raine is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Menace gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Phantom Menace is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Menace is looking for a sweep. Raine is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Menace is looking to control Raine's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Menace avoid being mounted?
Menace wants to get back to full guard but Raine has mounted him!
Menace holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Raine tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Menace is trying to escape the mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Phantom Menace.
Well Menace has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
