The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bessmertin lands a nice shot to the body.

Cartwright tries to land a leg kick but Bessmertin saw it coming and moves away.
A bone on bone clash there as Bessmertin blocks the leg kick.
Cartwright tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Bessmertin makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Artem Bessmertin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cartwright takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Bessmertin tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cartwright was well out of range. Poor timing from Bessmertin.

Cartwright gets tackled into the cage by Bessmertin. Bessmertin maintains the clinch.
Cartwright lands a knee to the head.
Cartwright is trying to pull guard but Bessmertin turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Cartwright throws an elbow but it's blocked.

Bessmertin gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Cartwright escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Bessmertin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Bessmertin's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Bessmertin is stalling in the full guard.
Bessmertin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Cartwright's guard.
Still in half guard, Bessmertin seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cartwright is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bessmertin pulls his head out easily.

Bessmertin looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Bessmertin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cartwright with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Well, if Bessmertin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Bessmertin wants to pass the guard but Cartwright is defending well.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Cartwright has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bessmertin is working away from the top position though.

Bessmertin has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Cartwright is trying to keep an underhook but Bessmertin manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Bessmertin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Cartwright wants to get back to his feet.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Bessmertin seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cartwright for as long as he can get away with.
