PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vitaliy Smekhov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikhail Rasputin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rasputin is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Toccata and Fugue. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vitaliy Smekhov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mikhail Rasputin!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Valeri Chadov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rasputin misses with a jab, cross combination.
Smekhov could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rasputin throws a head kick but Smekhov moves out of range.
Rasputin fails with a takedown attempt.
Rasputin throws a sloppy head kick and Smekhov moves out of range easily.

Smekhov swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Rasputin counters with a head kick. That will keep Smekhov thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Rasputin is trying desperately to improve position.

The referee warns Rasputin that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Smekhov knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rasputin on the ground.
Rasputin wants to control but Smekhov is having none of it.
Rasputin tries to reverse the position but Smekhov maintains control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smekhov breaks from Rasputin's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Rasputin tries to lock up and control but Smekhov gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Rasputin sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Smekhov prevents Rasputin from improving his position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Smekhov looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rasputin with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Smekhov tries to pass the half guard into mount. Rasputin knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Smekhov thows a huge punch but Rasputin dodges it nicely.
Smekhov is nestled in close to Rasputin, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Smekhov decides to stand and escape the position.

Smekhov drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smekhov tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smekhov has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Rasputin manages to work his way to half guard, despite Smekhov's best efforts.

Smekhov seems to be working for a kimura but Rasputin defends the submission attempt.

Rasputin is trying to maintain the position but Smekhov is very close to passing his half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rasputin pushes Smekhov off looking to stand but Smekhov dives back in and keeps control.
Smekhov thows a huge punch but Rasputin dodges it nicely.
Smekhov is thwarting Rasputin's attempts to control the position.
Smekhov tries to pass the half guard into mount. Rasputin knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Rasputin tries to roll over but Smekhov keeps him under control.
Rasputin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smekhov is working away from the top position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Rasputin has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Smekhov uses from the top position.

Rasputin has his foot on Smekhov's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smekhov works his way back into a safe position though.

Rasputin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smekhov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Smekhov is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Smekhov here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smekhov accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Rasputin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smekhov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Vitaliy Smekhov overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Smekhov might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Rasputin controls Smekhov momentarily but Smekhov frees himself.
Smekhov throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rasputin works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Smekhov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

A close second round but Mikhail Rasputin will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Rasputin enables Smekhov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Rasputin manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Rasputin is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Smekhov is staying active.
Rasputin pushes Smekhov away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Smekhov gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

A big shot lands for Smekhov! That's hurt Rasputin! Will he recover? Smekhov fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!
