PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rolls Royce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Art Vandelay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vandelay has chosen Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man as his entrance music. Art Vandelay will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Rolls Royce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Art Vandelay!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Elvis Blanc and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Royce stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Vandelay.
Royce tries to clinch up.

Royce bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Royce is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vandelay has escaped the position, nice work there.
Vandelay is pushing Royce's head away, looking to escape. Royce manages to hold on to the position though.
You can see the frustration on Vandelay's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The referee asks Royce politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Royce prefers to stall for the moment though.
Vandelay wants to get back to his feet but Royce drags him back down.

Royce tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Royce has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Vandelay has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Royce is working away from the top position though.

Vandelay is staying active underneath Royce, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Royce working over Vandelay with some ground and pound. Vandelay looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Royce thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Vandelay stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Vandelay wants it to stay on the feet.
Royce fails with a takedown attempt.
Royce shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Vandelay but Vandelay pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Royce tries to score a body lock takedown but Vandelay shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Vandelay makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Vandelay misses with a knee to the head.
Vandelay scores with a knee to the head.
Vandelay tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Vandelay lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Royce backwards.
Royce tries to pull guard but Vandelay holds him up against the cage and eventually Royce drops back down to his feet.
Royce is trying to drag Vandelay to the mat but Vandelay just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Royce tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Vandelay smiles and moves away.
Vandelay thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Royce if he has to take too many more of those.

Royce shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Vandelay counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Vandelay cracks the inside of Royce's front leg.
Vandelay throws a head kick that half lands.

Vandelay takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Nice uppercut there from Vandelay.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vandelay throws a punch but it's blocked by Royce.
Royce swings wildly with an uppercut but Vandelay uses good head movement to avoid it.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Vandelay obliges.

Royce tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Vandelay got a little sloppy there for a moment and Royce has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Vandelay has managed to get both his arms back between Royce's legs - danger averted.

Royce looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Royce had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Vandelay defends it easily.

Royce has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Vandelay is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Royce.
