PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rhodri Poacher (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Patrick King!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rhodri Poacher!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Poacher.

King throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Poacher was covering up waiting for the punch and King finishes the takedown easily into guard.
King might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

King stands up and waves to Poacher to follow him.

Poacher gets caught napping as King dives in and scores a takedown. Poacher manages to retain guard.
Poacher is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
King controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
King has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

King shoots in and bounces Poacher off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

King seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Poacher for as long as he can get away with.

Poacher is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

King stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Poacher swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
King is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

King controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Patrick King has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

King darts in and clinches Poacher up against the cage.
Poacher is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Poacher is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

King gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

King seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Poacher has his takedown stuffed

and King moves into the clinch.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



King looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
King looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
King lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Poacher trying to control from the bottom.
Poacher is trying to defend against the ground and pound but King scores with a couple of nice shots.

Poacher is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but King pulls his head out easily.

King takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Patrick King just wasn't active enough.
Poacher tries to clinch but King moves out of range.
Poacher will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Poacher stuffs the takedown.

Poacher has taken the fight to the clinch.
King is trying to break the clinch but Poacher has him pressed against the cage.

Poacher breaks from the clinch.

Nice uppercut there from Poacher.
King moves out of range of the leg kick from Poacher.
Poacher throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
King slaps away a takedown attempt from Poacher, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Poacher is breathing heavily.

King closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - King lands in his opponent's guard.
King stays in close to Poacher's body and controls the position.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Poacher wants to sweep here but King controlling him for the moment.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with King in particular looking to stall.

King is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
King's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as King accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


King displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Poacher.

Poacher moves into the clinch.

King tightens his grip and picks Poacher up, before dumping him to the ground. Poacher manages to land in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

King drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.

King shoots for a double leg takedown but Poacher sprawls well. He's pushed King's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Poacher is defended easily by King.
Poacher takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

and King counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
King stands up over Poacher, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Poacher has his foot on King's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. King works his way back into a safe position though.
King slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

King decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Poacher wants to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Patrick King.
Poacher misses with a low kick as King jumps back.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Horrible takedown by Poacher or perhaps it was just good defense by King which made him look bad.
Poacher shoots in for a double leg but King sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for King, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
