Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Julius Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Walter Walternate!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A good leg kick by Walternate.
A slapping leg kick lands for Walternate.
Walternate misses with a kick to the body
and Maia counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Walternate!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Maia content just to control the position here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Walternate reaches up to try and control the position but Maia seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Walternate rolls and tries to escape and now Maia has his back!
Walternate is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Maia is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Walternate breaks Maia's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Walternate pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maia is keeping the position for now.
Maia is looking for a triangle here but Walternate uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Maia is looking for a sweep.

Maia is not content to let Walternate control the position.
Walternate might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Maia kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Maia tries to improve position but can't.
Walternate takes a little break here. Maia wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Walternate tries to stand but Maia is controlling his head.
Both fighters take a look at the clock.
Maia is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Walternate off and has taken his back!
Walternate is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Maia off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Maia is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Walternate has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Maia looking to break Walternate's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Walternate remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Maia will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Walternate is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Maia is trying to stick to Walternate's back but Walternate is turning into Maia. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Maia's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Walternate.
Maia keeping moving, preventing Walternate from controlling successfully.
Maia not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Maia holds on and takes a little breather.

Walternate trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Walternate looking to sit in guard and control but Maia gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Maia wants to control from the top but Walternate keeps moving.
Walternate wants to get back to his feet but Maia is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Maia is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Walternate controls Maia momentarily but Maia frees himself.
Walternate is trying to control the position here. Maia has hold of a guillotine from the top though... oh, that looks naaaaasty, will Walternate tap? Yes he will! The fight is all over! Maia jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd.

After winning the bout, Julius Maia thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
