And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Why!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Emerson Jorge and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Why fails to land with a series of punches.
Why scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Machida doesn't seem bothered though.

Machida uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Why.

Lyoto Machida seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Why bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Machida's head backwards.

Why lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Machida dodges the punch combination from Why.
Why throws a right and a left that Machida avoids nicely.
The fight stays on the outside here - Machida looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Why clinches up against the cage.
Machida tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Machida has Why pressed against the cage, preventing Why from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Why can't break the clinch.
Why wants to get back to striking at distance but Machida won't allow it.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Why takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Why manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Why's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Machida takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Why rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Machida moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Why is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Machida rather than just go for the knockout.
Machida pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Machida misses with a head kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Why dominated that round.

John Why was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
