The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ricard shoots in but no luck this time.
Ricard misses with a double jab.
Alves ducks under a wild hook from Ricard.
No joy there for Ricard, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Frank Ricard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ricard fails with the takedown.

Alves bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Ricard is trying to control Alves's posture but Alves avoids it.
Ricard is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Alves is staying active.
Ricard prevents Alves from improving position.
Alves has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Ricard!
You get the feeling that Ricard really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Ricard is looking to improve his position but Alves isn't that keen on the idea.
Alves tries to control but Ricard wriggling away.

Ricard is just holding on here. Alves manages to take his back.
Ricard turns into Alves and is now in his guard.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Alves is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alves working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ricard doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ricard manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Alves bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ricard's guard.
Alves wants to control from the top but Ricard keeps moving.
Ricard looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alves is one step ahead there.
Ricard lands with a heel strike from the guard.
Ricard manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Alves manages to get himself to full guard.

Ricard is wriggling around but Alves manages to pass to half guard.
Alves is trying to control the action in half guard but Ricard is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Ricard flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Ricard is holding on to half guard well.
The fighters are battling for position here. Ricard manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Alves stops Ricard from standing up.
Alves tries to free his leg and advance position but Ricard is retaining full guard.

Ricard pushes Alves off and scrambles back to his feet.
Ricard takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ricard throws a right hand that Alves ducks under and follows up with a left that Alves also avoids with ease.
Ricard will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Ricard shoots in and bounces Alves off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Ricard looks gassed!

Alves is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ricard defends well.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Ricard slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Alves avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Ricard works over Alves's head and body with a nice combination.

It looks like Goncalo Alves has been cut.
Alves goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Ricard throws a combination that misses
and Alves counters with a thumping low kick.
Alves loses concentration momentarily and Ricard pounces with a three punch combo! Right, left, right! Alves crashes face first to the mat, out cold! Ricard finishes this one with a fantastically precise combo! Great stuff.
