The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carolus blocks a low kick nicely.

Martinez moves into the clinch successfully.

Martinez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Carolus misses with a takedown

and Martinez counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends Carolus down! Martinez is looking to finish but Carolus is intelligently defending himself.
This has been an exciting period of action!
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Carolus keeping full guard, as Martinez tries to pass.
Martinez wants to stand but Carolus has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Martinez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Carolus has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Martinez has managed to get both his arms back between Carolus's legs - danger averted.

Martinez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Carolus, up you get!
Martinez doesn't manage to clinch there - Carolus circles away.
Carolus looks for a takedown but Martinez sprawls well.
Martinez misses with a low kick.
Carolus will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

It looks like Diederik Carolus has been cut.
Martinez tries to clinch up.
Carolus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Martinez tries to avoid it but Carolus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Martinez to the ground. Martinez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Martinez looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Nice sprawl there from Martinez as Carolus shoots in.
Carolus gets caught by a brutal right hook which buckles his knees! Carolus tries to backpedal with his spaghettilegs but Martinez is headhunting and goes for the kill. A jab and a right hook connect and Carolus buckles badly as his eyes roll back. The referee steps in and saves Carolus!! Carolus is complaining but he was clearly out on his feet. Martinez throws his mouthpiece into the crowd. Mmmm spit-tastic.
