PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Black (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Walter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Walter is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Engel by Rammstein. Andre Walter told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Black!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Andre Walter!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Robert Douchet and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Walter scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Walter looks to land a combination but Black avoids it well.
Walter ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Walter throws a combination that misses

and Black counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Black is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Black stops Walter from getting back to his feet.
Walter is not content to let Black control the position.
Black missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Walter is staying active underneath Black, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Black is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Walter sees it coming and defends easily.
Walter tries to kick Black off but Black keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Black is trying to control the action in half guard but Walter is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Black is looking to advance position but Walter won't allow it.
Walter is trying to stand up here but Black is controlling him well.

Black sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Walter defending well though.
Black prevents Walter from standing back up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Black in particular looking to stall.
Black is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Walter reverses the position - he's now on top in Black's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Black trying to keep a closed guard but Walter is proving a slippery customer.
Black tries to strike from the bottom.

Black tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Black lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Walter!

Black working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Walter wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Black jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Walter is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Walter and Black has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Black looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Walter is avoiding damage well.
Black throws an elbow but Walter slips to the side and avoids it well.
Black tries to advance to mount but can't.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Black moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Black dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Walter misses with a double jab.
Black walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.


It looks like John Black has been cut.

Black moves into range and clinches up with Walter.
Black will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Walter up against the cage.

Black works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Black wants to control from the top but Walter keeps moving.
Black is looking to work some ground and pound but Walter has wrist control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Walter wants to get back to his feet but Black is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Black trying to control but Walter is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

John Black has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Walter lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Black moves in looking to clinch but Walter pushes him off.
Black uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Walter.
Walter misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Walter misses with a body punch
and Black counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Black shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Walter defends it nicely.

Walter gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Black drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Walter manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Black has Walter in his guard.
Black has a closed guard, preventing Walter from standing up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Walter postures up.

Black looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Walter has picked Black up and slammed him! Black can't keep hold of the triangle and Walter manages to pass to side control!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Black looking for a sweep but Walter has passed into full mount! Oh no!

Walter is standing up, even though he is in mount.
A chopping leg kick lands by Black.
Walter scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Walter takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Black scores with a kick to the body.
Walter ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Black moves away.
Black tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Walter manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Walter lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Walter on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Black. Black obviously looking to wear him down.
Andre Walter seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Walter swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Black has Walter up against the cage in a clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee is keeping an eye on Black - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Black has hold of one of Walter's legs. Walter is fighting the takedown attempt but Black gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Black trying to control the position from guard on top but Walter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Walter wriggles free and stands up.
Walter just misses with a punch to the body.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Walter misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Black.

Walter lands a left and a right that send Black crashing to the mat, dazed. Walter thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Walter throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andre Walter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on John Black's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Black is looking to clinch.
John Black is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Walter misses the jab.
Black throws a leg kick that is checked
enabling Walter to counter with a crisp jab.
Andre Walter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Black scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Black thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Walter is trying to stand up here but Black is controlling him well.
Walter blocking the ground and pound attempt from Black.
Black is trying to control. Walter wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

John Black overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Black is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Walter defends it well.

Walter keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Black wants to work for an arm triangle but Walter is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Black is looking for a kimura here.
Black not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Walter is trying to stand up here but Black is controlling him well.
Black wants to take a breather but Walter is having none of it.
Walter is looking to escape.

Black stands up from half guard.
A jab from Walter misses.
Black dodges the punch combination from Walter.
Walter lands a two punch combo.
Walter lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Black circles away quickly and effectively.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Black drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Black tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Black has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Walter is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Black is controlling him well.
Black postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Walter wants to get back to his feet.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Black trying to control the action but Walter is working from the bottom.
Walter is pushing Black's head away, looking to escape. Black manages to hold on to the position though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Walter on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Black is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Walter has escaped the position, nice work there.
Black throws an elbow but Walter slips to the side and avoids it well.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Black showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Black has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
