PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Carson Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Carson Wood has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Carson Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ray Thomas!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shigeki Sano and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wood throws a nice looking combination but Thomas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Thomas has a takedown stuffed.
Thomas shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Wood eats them both and turns towards Thomas to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Wood stuffs the takedown attempt from Thomas. Thomas gets slowly back to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Thomas. No joy for Wood on that attempt.
Wood misses with a body kick.
Wood fails to land with a series of punches.
Wood is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Wood looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Thomas instigates a clinch.
Wood drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Thomas gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wood misses with a punch to the body.
Wood could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Thomas turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Thomas manages to end up in side control.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Thomas is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Wood will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Wood tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Thomas has control of Wood's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Wood regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Wood is wriggling around trying to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
You get the feeling that Wood really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Thomas sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Thomas misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Thomas looking to control and managing it successfully.
Wood is working to get back to half guard.
Wood really wants to buck Thomas off and get back to his feet.

Wood wants to control but Thomas is having none of it.

Wood might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Wood wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Thomas.

Thomas unloads with some shots from mount but Wood bucks and avoids them well.

Thomas stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Wood lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Thomas circles away quickly and effectively.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Thomas checks a leg kick.
Wood moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Wood darts in trying to clinch
and Thomas counters with a body kick that stops Wood in his tracks momentarily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Wood shoots in looking for a takedown. Thomas tries to sprawl out of it but Wood keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Thomas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carson Wood. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Wood connects with a right hand. Thomas shakes it off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ray Thomas dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Thomas throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Thomas lands a jab to Wood's midsection.
Wood throws a nice looking combination but Thomas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Thomas rushes Wood and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Thomas jumps guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Thomas holds on and takes a little breather.
Wood won't allow Thomas to sweep him here.

Thomas has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Wood off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Wood throws a solid leg kick but Thomas takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Wood.

Thomas gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Thomas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Carson Wood seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wood throws a nice looking combination but Thomas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

A punch combination from Wood misses.
Thomas circles away from the clinch attempt.
Thomas shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wood as he avoids it easily.
Thomas is breathing heavily.
Thomas slips a jab and a cross from Wood.
Wood throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Wood throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Thomas drives through and clinches with Wood against the cage.

Wood is fighting off a takedown attempt but Thomas is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Wood to the mat. Wood regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Thomas stands up and waves to Wood to follow him.
Wood lands with a nice combination. Thomas backs away looking to recover.
Wood swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Thomas counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Thomas wants to stand up but Wood is controlling the position.
Wood moves into full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thomas trying to control the position from guard on top but Wood is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ray Thomas has got the better of the ground game so far.
Wood tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Wood escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Thomas gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Wood looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Wood is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Thomas is not content to let Wood control the position.
Wood throwing shots but Thomas is blocking nicely.

Wood is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Wood is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Wood sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Thomas defending well though.
Wood throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Thomas is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Wood is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Wood throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Wood thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Wood missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Wood wants to take a breather but Thomas is having none of it.
Thomas blocking the ground and pound attempt from Wood.

Wood is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Wood has hold of Thomas's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Thomas manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Wood wants to control the pace but Thomas is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Carson Wood will probably get the nod.
That's time! Wood's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Thomas closes this distance looking for a takedown but Wood circles away.
Thomas slips a jab and a cross from Wood.
Wood throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Some bone on bone action there as Thomas checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Wood misses with the combination.

Thomas gets a clinch.
Thomas is pressed up against the cage. Wood has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Thomas down to the mat. Thomas avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Wood misses with a jab, cross combination.
Wood tries to close the distance and clinch up but Thomas swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Thomas closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Thomas lands in his opponent's guard.
Wood looking for a sweep. Not yet Wood, not yet.
Thomas takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Thomas looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Thomas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Wood is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Thomas is aware though and is defending well.
Wood wants to stand but Thomas is controlling the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wood has a hand on Thomas's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Thomas takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Thomas is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Thomas throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Thomas displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Wood.
Wood throws a series of punches but Thomas avoids them all with ease.
Carson Wood is winning the standup battle so far.
Thomas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wood fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Thomas avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carson Wood. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Wood throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Thomas's waist but Thomas gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Wood off to one side.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wood fails with the takedown.
Thomas shoots in for a double leg but Wood sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Carson Wood.
I think Wood has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
